The Caproni-Reggiane Fighters 1938-1945

The Caproni-Reggiane Fighters 1938-1945 PDF Author: Piero Prato
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Caproni airplanes

Book Description
"It is the author's intention to describe in this volume the products of an Italian Aeronautical firm which, compared with other better known concerns, has always been unfairly and with no reason, neglected. As a matter of fact, the Officine Meccaniche Italiane Reggiane of Reggio Emilia, in spite of the relately scarce number of craft completed in the whole range of their aeronautical production, have the great merit of having created one of the most successful series of single-seater fighters that the Italian specialised industry has ever been able to realize: being extremely compact and pure in their shape, the products of the Reggiane works had one fault - if we can call it a fault - to enter in line too late and in too limited number; due, undoubtedly, to the stormy period in which they were completed. We hope that the reader will consider, while going through these pages, the extreme difficulty due mostly to difficulty of tracing photographic material and numerous and exact reports on Caproni-Reggiane aeroplanes; difficulty due mostly to destructions and mutilations suffered by the firm's archives during the war." --Preface, page 2.

The Italian Blitz 1940–43

The Italian Blitz 1940–43 PDF Author: Richard Worrall
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1472841468
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 97

Book Description
Between June 1940 and August 1943, RAF Bomber Command undertook a little-known strategic bombing campaign in Europe. The target was Mussolini's Italy. This air campaign was a key part of the strategic policy of Britain from 1940 to 1943, which aimed at securing Italy's early surrender. However, it posed unique challenges, not least of which was Italy's natural defences of distance and the Alps. The bombing campaign against Italy can be divided into a number of phases, with each one having its own specific goals such as affecting Italian war production or hindering the Italian Navy's war in the Mediterranean. However, each also furthered the ultimate aim of forcing Italy's final capitulation, demonstrating that the tactic of area-bombing was not just about the destruction of an enemy's cities, as it could also fulfil wider strategic and political objectives. Indeed, the intensity and frequency of attack was greatly controlled, and the heavy bombing of Italy was only ever sanctioned by Britain's civilian war leaders to achieve both military and political goals. The issue of target-selection was also subject to a similar political restriction; cities and ports like Milan, Turin, Genoa and La Spezia were sanctioned under an official Directive, but other places, such as Verona, Venice, Florence and, above all, Rome, remained off-limits. This fascinating title from British strategic and military history expert Dr Richard Worrall explores the political, motivational and strategic challenges of the campaign in full. His thorough analysis and meticulous research is supported by specially commissioned artwork, maps, and contemporary photographs.

The Royal Navy and the Mediterranean Convoys

The Royal Navy and the Mediterranean Convoys PDF Author: Malcolm Llewellyn-Jones
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134704348
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
This book contains the Naval Staff History originally issued by the Admiralty in 1957 as a confidential book for use within the Royal Navy. It has since been declassified and is published here for the first time, along with an extended preface. This volume describes the dangerous convoy operations in the Mediterranean which were necessary to relieve the garrison and people of Malta, covering the period from the beginning of 1941 until the end of 1942. These convoys had to be fought through against determined attack by German and Italian surface, submarine and, particularly, air forces. Although casualties were proportionately higher than in Atlantic convoys, Malta was successfully re-supplied and remained a considerable impediment to enemy’s attempts to supply their armies in North Africa. These operations reveal the dedication, courage and professionalism of the sailors (of both naval and merchant services) as well as the airmen who supported them. A new preface sets the scene for the Staff History. The Royal Navy and the Mediterranean Convoys will be of great interest for students interested in the Mediterranean Convoys, Second World War and naval and military history.
