This report surveys the experiences of a sample of refugee women in their first two years in Australia. It identifies their resettlement needs and how well these needs are met by existing services. The research was instigated by the Australian National Consultative Committee on Refugee Women (ANCCORW), which was formed in 1989 in response to an initiative of UNHCR and the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) that the plight of refugee women should be made a priority issue until the end of the decade. The Introduction to the report contains a literature review and a background discussion of problems common to refugee and other migrant women and the additional problems of refugee women. After describing the methodology and explaining the sample profile, the report presents profiles and needs of various case studies. The study discusses differences in resettlement experience based on ethnicity and several personal variables such as level of English spoken, level of education in country of origin, rural or urban background, age, age of dependent children. A separate chapter presents the most urgent resettlement needs as described by the refugees themselves. Having identified the services most urgently asked for, the report then examines the resettlement services in Australia in light of the significant differences in the needs of different groups of women and makes recommendations for improvements. The major services considered are: English language teaching provision; accommodation; employment services; orientation and information services; emotional support and therapy; childcare. The report contains several annexes and references.

The past 25 years have seen a major paradigm shift in the field of violence prevention, from the assumption that violence is inevitable to the recognition that violence is preventable. Part of this shift has occurred in thinking about why violence occurs, and where intervention points might lie. In exploring the occurrence of violence, researchers have recognized the tendency for violent acts to cluster, to spread from place to place, and to mutate from one type to another. Furthermore, violent acts are often preceded or followed by other violent acts. In the field of public health, such a process has also been seen in the infectious disease model, in which an agent or vector initiates a specific biological pathway leading to symptoms of disease and infectivity. The agent transmits from individual to individual, and levels of the disease in the population above the baseline constitute an epidemic. Although violence does not have a readily observable biological agent as an initiator, it can follow similar epidemiological pathways. On April 30-May 1, 2012, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Forum on Global Violence Prevention convened a workshop to explore the contagious nature of violence. Part of the Forum's mandate is to engage in multisectoral, multidirectional dialogue that explores crosscutting, evidence-based approaches to violence prevention, and the Forum has convened four workshops to this point exploring various elements of violence prevention. The workshops are designed to examine such approaches from multiple perspectives and at multiple levels of society. In particular, the workshop on the contagion of violence focused on exploring the epidemiology of the contagion, describing possible processes and mechanisms by which violence is transmitted, examining how contextual factors mitigate or exacerbate the issue. Contagion of Violence: Workshop Summary covers the major topics that arose during the 2-day workshop. It is organized by important elements of the infectious disease model so as to present the contagion of violence in a larger context and in a more compelling and comprehensive way.

The increasing number of refugees, asylum seekers, and irregular migrants poses a challenge for mental health services in Europe. This review found that these groups are exposed to risk factors for mental disorders before, during, and after migration. The prevalence of psychotic, mood, and substance-use disorders in these groups varies but overall resembles that in the host populations. Refugees and asylum seekers, however, have higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder. Poor socioeconomic conditions are associated with increased rates of depression five years after resettlement. Refugees, asylum seekers, and irregular migrants encounter barriers to accessing mental health care. Good practice for mental health care includes promoting social integration, developing outreach services, coordinating health care, providing information on entitlements and available services, and training professionals to work with these groups. These actions require resources and organizational flexibility.
