Book Description
Most Christians take an honest look at themselves and conclude that their limited talents, energy, and knowledge mean that they don't amount to much. Francis A. Schaeffer says that the biblical emphasis is quite different. With God there are no little people! This book contains sixteen sermons that explore the weakness and significance of humanity in relationship to the infinite and personal God. Each was preached by Schaeffer at L'Abri Fellowship in Switzerland to the community that gathered there to work, learn, and worship together. The focus of this collection is the lasting truth of the Bible, the faithfulness of God, the sufficiency of the work of Christ, and the reality of God's Spirit in history. The sermons represent a variety of styles-some are topical, some expound Old Testament passages, and still others delve into New Testament texts. No Little People includes theological sermons and messages that focus specifically on daily life and Christian practice. Each sermon is a single unit, and all are valuable for family devotions or other group study and worship. Readers will be encouraged by the value that God places on each person made in His image.

Alexander Campbell and Joseph Smith

Alexander Campbell and Joseph Smith PDF Author: RoseAnn Benson
Publisher: Byu Press
ISBN: 9781944394288
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 396

Book Description
Two nineteenth-century men, Alexander Campbell and Joseph Smith, each launched restoration movements in the United States, pejoratively called Campbellites and Mormonites. In post-revolutionary America, characterized by the Second Great Awakening and disestablishment, they vied for seekers and dissatisfied mainstream Christians, which led to conflict in northeastern Ohio. Both were searching for the primordial beginning of Christianity: Campbell looking back to the Christian church described in the New Testament epistles, and Smith looking even further back to the time of Adam and Eve as the first Christians. Campbell took a rational approach to reading the Bible, emphasizing the New Testament and began by advocating reform among the Baptists. Smith took a revelatory approach to reading the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, and adding new scriptures. Campbell was most focused on restoring to the church ordinances and practices of the apostolic church that had been neglected¿whereas Smith was restoring ancient doctrines, practices, ordinances, and covenants to a church that had ceased to exist shortly after the time of the Apostles.

Still Time to Care

Still Time to Care PDF Author: Greg Johnson
Publisher: Zondervan
ISBN: 0310116066
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
At the start of the gay rights movement in 1969, evangelicalism's leading voices cast a vision for gay people who turn to Jesus. It was C.S. Lewis, Billy Graham, Francis Schaeffer and John Stott who were among the most respected leaders within theologically orthodox Protestantism. We see with them a positive pastoral approach toward gay people, an approach that viewed homosexuality as a fallen condition experienced by some Christians who needed care more than cure. With the birth and rise of the ex-gay movement, the focus shifted from care to cure. As a result, there are an estimated 700,000 people alive today who underwent conversion therapy in the United States alone. Many of these patients were treated by faith-based, testimony-driven parachurch ministries centered on the ex-gay script. Despite the best of intentions, the movement ended with very troubling results. Yet the ex-gay movement died not because it had the wrong sex ethic. It died because it was founded on a practice that diminished the beauty of the gospel. Yet even after the closure of the ex-gay umbrella organization Exodus International in 2013, the ex-gay script continues to walk about as the undead among us, pressuring people like me to say, "I used to be gay, but I'm not gay anymore. Now I'm just same-sex attracted." For orthodox Christians, the way forward is a path back to where we were forty years ago. It is time again to focus with our Neo-Evangelical fathers on care--not cure--for our non-straight sisters and brothers who are living lives of costly obedience to Jesus. With warmth and humor as well as original research, Still Time to Care will chart the path forward for our churches and ministries in providing care. It will provide guidance for the gay person who hears the gospel and finds themselves smitten by the life-giving call of Jesus. Woven throughout the book will be Richard Lovelace’s 1978 call for a "double repentance" in which gay Christians repent of their homosexual sins and the church repents of its homophobia--putting on display for all the power of the gospel.

The Great Restoration

The Great Restoration PDF Author: Meic Pearse
Publisher: Paternoster Publishing
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 348

Book Description
During the 16th and 17th centuries various radical groups emerged which sought to break the medieval ties of church and state and restore the vision of the early church. This book provides a witty an lucid examination of the origins and development of these movements and considers their continuing legacy today. Pearse charts the rise and progress of continental Anabaptism—both evangelical and heretical—through the 16th century. He then follows the story of those English people who become impatient with Puritanism and separated—first from the Church of England and then from one another—to form the antecedents of later Congregationalists, Baptists and Quakers.

Book Description
The gospel is not about a law you must keep.It is about receiving a life that will keep you. It is not about living this lifeout of fear. It is about living a life of faith. It is not about rules. It is about arelationship with the Father. The message of John the Baptist and of Jesus is simply this; repent, for thekingdom of God is at hand. The kingdom of God is one paradigm shift away. Oneof the meanings of the word repent is to change your mind. It also means to changeone's bent, or to turn about. Many times, when we preach repentance, we preachwhat we turn from, but we never emphasize what we turn toward. Many have turnedfrom law and religion, only to turn toward the bondage of sin. Or they have turnedfrom the bondage of sin, only to trade it for the bondage of religion. The messageof this book is primarily to help you turn toward the present reality of the kingdomof God. The gospel of the kingdom is not just about a ticket to heaven someday. Itis about receiving the Holy Spirit that will allow you to live the abundant life as acitizen of the kingdom of God right now. The message that John the Baptist wasdeclaring was that of another form of government called the kingdom. It was comingon the scene, and would replace the government of the law.The Message Bible, in II Corinthians 3:7-9 calls the old covenant the governmentof death and condemnation. It was a constitution chiseled on stone tablets. The newcovenant is the constitution of the kingdom and is a government of affirmation. Itis written on the fleshly tablets of our heart. It is the government of the living spirit. This book will help you turn toward the Lord. When our heart turns toward theLord, the veil will be taken away. This book will help you make the paradigm shiftfrom law to grace.
