Popular Religion and Modernization in Latin America

Popular Religion and Modernization in Latin America PDF Author: Cristián Parker G.
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
"This landmark work constitutes a complete historical, sociological, and political view of religion as a cultural expression in Latin America. Parker shows how, beginning with the arrival of the conquistadors, religion has played a transcendent role in shaping the national cultures of the region, particularly its popular cultures, and continues to do so." "Parker argues that while capitalistic modernization and urbanization do lead to secularization, this process is not linear or progressive. Secularization in Latin America does not destroy its religious fabric but rather transforms it, accentuating its pluralistic character." "Christianity, and particularly Roman Catholicism, has influenced Latin American identity and culture most profoundly, but it has by no means been the sole influence, nor has Christianity itself remained unchanged in the process. As a product of history and capitalistic modernization, the trait of religion that emerges most clearly is that of cultural and religious pluralism."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Liberation Theologies on Shifting Grounds

Liberation Theologies on Shifting Grounds PDF Author: Georges de Schrijver
Publisher: Peeters Publishers
ISBN: 9789042903029
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 484

Book Description
Besides their insistence on praxis and the application of the Word of God to a given situation, Liberation Theologies make ample use of tools of analysis to uncover root causes of oppression. Now, it is precisely with respect to these tools that Liberation Theologies today find themselves on shifting grounds. In intra-ecclesiastical circles cultural concerns have come to replace socio-economic analysis, whereas after the implosion of the East Bloc the liberationists proper also pay more attention to the issues of gender, ecology, and indigenous movements. The contributions to this volume, originating from various continents, discuss to what extent this shift in emphasis is desirable, and acceptable, and conclude that the cultural focus cannot possibly invalidate but only enrich and complete the socio-economic analysis. They, moreover, try to assess the developments in light of globalization (economics, informatics), on the one hand, and postmodernity on the other. Given the impact of western culture politics, the question arises as to whether the native cultures will succeed in keeping up their religious core values and structures of solidarity - two elements so indispensable for liberative commitments.

Evangelization from a Liberation Perspective

Evangelization from a Liberation Perspective PDF Author: Priscilla Pope-Levison
Publisher: Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
In this pioneering work, Dr. Pope-Levison marshalls an enormous amount of material on the topic of evangelization in Latin American liberation theology. By analyzing the writings of ten theologians, she demonstrates convincingly that evangelization serves uniquely as a bridge between theology and praxis. This study is indispensable for students of contextual theology and evangelization. In addition, the introductory discussion of evangelization in recent documents from the Roman Catholic Church and the World Council of Churches renders this an invaluable tool for ecumenical studies as well.

Poverty, Money, and Ecology as Pillars of Pope Francis' Pontificate (2013–2019)

Poverty, Money, and Ecology as Pillars of Pope Francis' Pontificate (2013–2019) PDF Author: Pablo Alberto Baisotti
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1793654808
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 283

Book Description
This book will deal with arguments that analyze the Vatican policies of Francis, during the first seven years of his pontificate, in relation to some of the most urgent questions concerning humanity: migrants and refugees, the economy, and ecology. The logical choice of the time period for this work is given by Jorge Bergoglio's ascent to the "chair of St. Peter" until the end of 2019. That is why there is an interrelationship between history and the present, since it is written—in part—as his apostolic journeys, interventions, diplomatic actions, and discourses are carried out. To this is added an important quantity of writings of his authorship, as well as of some of his predecessors, in order to frame the question in a historically correct way and to understand his approach to issues of politics and international diplomacy, given his investiture as a religious and—at the same time—political leader
