La Universidad es una institución que se crea relativamente tarde en la historiade la humanidad. Aunque la organización de los estudios y la transmisión de losconocimientos de la época ya se había producido en la antigüedad clásica, Atenas,Roma, Berito y Constantinopla, son los ejemplos más destacados, se suele atribuir al siglo XII el nacimiento de la Universidad en sentido moderno, y considerar a Bolonia, Paris y Oxford como las más antiguas universidades reconocidas como tales.El nacimiento de las universidades españolas tiene lugar en los primeros decenios del siglo XIII: 1212 en Palencia, 1215 en Salamanca y aproximadamente 1260 en Valladolid.La Universidad es un producto histórico. No la entenderemos, ni podremos construir la universidad del futuro, si desconocemos o no tenemos en cuenta, para desecharlo o asimilarlo, lo que esta ha sido en los siglos pasados y es en el momento presente.
