Book Description
The reflection of both right-hand and left-hand circularly polarized plane electromagnetic waves, normally incident along the direction of an imposed static magnetic field in an anisotropic plasma, was investigated. Detailed measurements at a frequency of 9.2 Gc of the intensity and phase of the wave reflected from a helium afterglow plasma over wide ranges of plasma frequency and electron cyclotron frequency were carried out. The measured reflected power varied from less than one percent of the incident power to complete reflection and large undulations in both intensity and phase of the reflected wave with changing electron density and magnetic field were observed. Comparison with theory based on a simple sharply bounded uniform plasma slab shows good agreement for the general nature of the dependence of the reflected wave on the plasma properties. The exact electron densities corresponding to the maxima and minima and the absolute values of the intensity and phase of the reflected wave are not accurately predicted by this simple theoretical model. In the region of the electron cyclotron frequency, for an incident right-hand circularly polarized wave, the reflected signal undergoes a reduced variation in phase and the intensity after attaining a maximum is observed to decrease with increasing electron density. (Author).

Transmission and Reflection of Arbitrarily Polarized Electromagnetic Waves at the Boundary of an Anisotropic Plasma

Transmission and Reflection of Arbitrarily Polarized Electromagnetic Waves at the Boundary of an Anisotropic Plasma PDF Author: K. A. GRAF

Book Description
The interaction of a plane, electromagnetic wave with a flat, uniform, freespace-plasma interface in a static magnetic field has been considered for arbitrary angles of incidence. The dispersion relation for the plasma is a complex quartic equation which reduces to a quadratic if the static magnetic field and plasma boundary is orientated along any one of the rectangular coordinate axes. (These axes need not simulataneously be the same for the plasma and the magnetic field.) The analysis is greatly simplified by writing the boundary conditions in terms of the fields in the plasma, and for the model considered a rigorous solution has been obtained. The solution indicates that two waves can be simultaneously supported by the plasma. These two waves are, in general, elliptically polarized, plane, and nonhomogeneous. Either wave can be launched by a suitable elliptically polarized, plane incident wave. Superposition of these waves, each of which gives one plasma wave, is a simpler procedure than superposing plane or circularly polarized waves, each of which gives rise to two waves. Although the field vectors associated with the two waves in the plasma can be superimposed, the energy carried in each wave cannot since the two waves interfere within the plasma. (Author).

Transient Reflection and Transmission of a Plane Wave Normally Incident Upon a Semi-infinite Anisotropic Plasma

Transient Reflection and Transmission of a Plane Wave Normally Incident Upon a Semi-infinite Anisotropic Plasma PDF Author: Carl T. Case
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Electromagnetism
Languages : en
Pages : 42

Book Description
General solutions for the transmitted and reflected waves in integral form are obtained for a plane wave of arbitrary time dependence, normally incident upon a semiinfinite, cold, collisionless, homogeneous, anisotropic ionized medium. The special case of an isotropic plasma with an incident wave of harmonic time dependence is also investigated. (Author).

Numerical Calculations for Reflection of Electromagnetic Waves from a Lossy Magnetoplasma

Numerical Calculations for Reflection of Electromagnetic Waves from a Lossy Magnetoplasma PDF Author: Lillie C. Walters
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Electromagnetic waves
Languages : en
Pages : 28

Book Description
Extensive numerical results are presented for the reflection coefficient of a horizontally stratified ionized medium. The profiles of electron density and the collision frequencies are both taken to be exponential functions. The d-c magnetic field is taken to be horizontal and transverse to the direction of propagation. The specific results described are applicable to the oblique reflection of VLF radio waves in the D layer of the ionosphere for propagation along the magnetic equator. It is confirmed that the reflection coefficient is non-reciprocal in both amplitude and phase. For a wide range of the parameters, the magnitude of the reflection coefficient is greater for west-to-east propagation than for east-to-west propagation. The extensive graphical data in the present paper are to be regarded as supplementary to the paper 'Reflection of Electromagnetic Waves from a Lossy Magetoplasma' which contained only a small sample of such calculations. Electromagnetic Radiation from a Dipole in an Anisotropic Plasma

Electromagnetic Radiation from a Dipole in an Anisotropic Plasma PDF Author: Hans Henry Kuehl
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Electromagnetic theory
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
The general solution to the problem of the radiation of an electric dipole in a magnetically-biased cold plasma is presented. Since the magnetostatic field causes the plasma to be anisotropic, the far field is in general quite complicated. It is found that in general several waves exist, traveling in different directions with different indices of refraction. These waves interfere to produce beats and amplitude modulation, also causing the resultant time-average energy flow to have components in other than the radial direction, a result which is contrary to the isotropic case.
