First President

First President PDF Author: Heather Hughes
Publisher: Jacana Media
ISBN: 1770098135
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 339

Book Description
A full biography of the founding president of the African National Council (ANC), this account uncovers the inspirations for John L. Dube's many public achievements. Tracing the history of his forbearers in the Zulu kingdom, this volume chronicles the politician's life from his birth in 1871, and highlights his many achievements, including the founding of the Ohlange School, the key role he played in the Bhambatha Rebellion, and the authorship of the first Zulu novel. As it evaluates Dube's five-year presidency of the ANC, this book shows that in spite of the many conflicts and ambiguities in his position, Dube's central political belief--that Africans should be directly represented in the parliament of the land--remained remarkably constant throughout his long career.

A History of South Africa to 1870

A History of South Africa to 1870 PDF Author: Monica Wilson
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000644286
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 506

Book Description
Originally published in 1982 and based on the 1969 Oxford History of South Africa, this book discusses some of the trends in the historiography of South Africa before the beginning of large-scale mining operations in Kimberley in 1870. A deliberate attempt was made to look at the roots of South African society and to take due account of all its peoples. The book includes a survey of archaeological data, emphasizing the links between South Africa and the rest of the continent, and between the more remote and more recent past in South Africa. The lives of the hunting, herding and cultivating peoples who lived in South Africa before the advent of the Europeans. The foundation of a colonial society is described, and the expansion of that society until the 1770s. The final chapters review the relations between the peoples of the Cape Colony and the Nguni cultivators from their first meetings until about 1870 and the growth of the plural society in the Cape Colony until 1970.

Port and Harbour Engineering

Port and Harbour Engineering PDF Author: Adrian Jarvis
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351909916
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 482

Book Description
During the 19th century, the engineering of ports and harbours became a large and specialised branch of the profession. This development began in ports in physically difficult locations and may be particularly identified with the growth of the Port of Liverpool. Stimulated by the arrival of ever-larger steamships and the heavy investment in port facilities that they demanded, it spread around much of the world. The opening papers give examples of what could be achieved in antiquity; the following ones set out the advances in design and technology from 1700 to the start of this century - and note some of the failures and recurrent problems. They also illustrate the critical importance of political and economic factors in determining what the engineers achieved.
