Book Description
Excerpt from Records of the Colony of New Plymouth in New England, Vol. 1: 1633 1640 The volumes of Plymouth Records consist of the original minutes of proceedings at the General Court of that colony and of the Courts of Assistants, all held in the town of Plymouth. Consequently they con tain the Court Orders, grants of land, the laws, the judicial acts of the Courts, all recorded matters relating to the probate of wills and the administration of estates, deeds of land from the Indian aborigines, and the only evidences in relation to the landed property of the section of the Commonwealth included within the limits of that colony under its charter. Besides the above mentioned, there are lists of the freemen of the colony, and many of the early marriages, births, and deaths, which were returned to the colonial secretary for record by the town clerks of the several municipalities which were under its jurisdiction. There are also among these manuscript records others of great value, relating to the history of the ancient confederated colonies of New England - the original minutes and records of proceedings of the Commissioners of the United Colonies of the Massachusetts Bay, New Plymouth, Connecticut, and New Haven, in New England. Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
This seventh volume in Shurtleff's ongoing series of court records encompasses the seven years from June 1661 to July 1668, during which time Thomas Prence was governor of the colony. Records of the Colony of New Plymouth in New England, Volume IX
Author: David Pulsifer
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780788410512
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 260
Book Description
Continuing the body of work begun by Nathaniel Shurtleff, David Pulsifer presents the ninth volume in this series of vital historical records for the colony of New Plymouth. The documents contained herein were transcribed from handwritten originals, only a few folios of which survived the fire that consumed the Boston Court House in December 1747. What remains of these records constitutes an invaluable resource for historians, illustrating the workings of colonial government in remarkable detail. The text is divided into four major sections Agreement Respecting the Bounds Betwixt Plymouth and Massachusetts, Articles of Confederation, Acts of the Commissioners, and Petition of Humphrey Johnson, and Answer of the Court Thereto with a general index of names, subjects and localities. The majority of the text is concerned with the resolution of land disputes between the neighboring colonies, and the maintenance of royal authority in the region. Relations with neighboring Indian tribes and treaties are also discussed at length as well as the more mundane procedures of the colonial government, such as appointments of commissioners, organization and dissolution of committees, proceedings of the courts, transcriptions of speeches, and acquisition of resources for the colonies. (1859, ), 2016, 51/2x81/2, paper, indices, 258 pp

Yvain
Author: Chretien de Troyes
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300187580
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 242
Book Description
The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.
