The Tyranny of Printers

The Tyranny of Printers PDF Author: Jeffrey L. Pasley
Publisher: University of Virginia Press
ISBN: 0813921899
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 540

Book Description
Although frequently attacked for their partisanship and undue political influence, the American media of today are objective and relatively ineffectual compared to their counterparts of two hundred years ago. From the late eighteenth to the late nineteenth century, newspapers were the republic's central political institutions, working components of the party system rather than commentators on it. The Tyranny of Printers narrates the rise of this newspaper-based politics, in which editors became the chief party spokesmen and newspaper offices often served as local party headquarters. Beginning when Thomas Jefferson enlisted a Philadelphia editor to carry out his battle with Alexander Hamilton for the soul of the new republic (and got caught trying to cover it up), the centrality of newspapers in political life gained momentum after Jefferson's victory in 1800, which was widely credited to a superior network of papers. Jeffrey L. Pasley tells the rich story of this political culture and its culmination in Jacksonian democracy, enlivening his narrative with accounts of the colorful but often tragic careers of individual editors.

And' after a life of activity, died at their chosen home. Being buried in the yard of a church established by their neighbors and themselves. Their graves were unknown and unnoted for a cen tury, and it has only been through search of official records that the identity of John and Elizabeth Bull, and that. Of their imme diate descendants, have been absolutely determined. Some branches of the family have had their lines partially worked out and put into print, and wherever these lists have been available, they have been used to strengthen the foundations of this record: and many members of the family, far and wide, have shown great interest in its progress, supplying missing links, data, and photographs; for all of which due credit was and is thankfully given. It is to be regretted that several who expressed such inter est have not lived to see the work accomplished; but it is submitted that these pages may be of value in the years to come, that the memories of those who have gone will be better kept in mind and not forgotten. A Record of the Cope Family

Book Description
Excerpt from A Record of the Cope Family: As Established in America, by Oliver Cope, Who Came From England to Pennsylvania About the Year 1682, With the Residences, Dates of Births, Deaths and Marriages of His Descendants as Far as Ascertained This undertaking, which has been a considerable time in progress, is at last concluded, though not so complete as might be desired. Owing to the difficulty in dis covering the residences, together With the neglect of many to answer inquiries, and other circumstances, it is almost impossible to obtain a complete record of so large a family. Consequently there is much information want ing, and probably errors in what is given; that from different sources not agreeing, in some cases, on the same point. Still I think it is as near a perfect family record as anything of the kind I have met with, and contains more names, though there are many families whose descendants, if they could be ascertained, would far outnumber the Copes. It was not thought best to insert much information in regard to the wealth or occupations of the different members of the family, or anything that would tend to a discrimination between them, socially or morally. I may here offer my thanks to the many who have assisted me by furnishing the records of their own and other families. The information respecting some branches of the family was obtained near three years ago, and couse quently changes may have taken place of which no account is given. Genealogical Record of the Hambleton Family

Genealogical Record of the Hambleton Family PDF Author: Chalkley J. Hambleton
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780331172607
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 108

Book Description
Excerpt from Genealogical Record of the Hambleton Family: Descendants of James Hambleton of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Who Died in 1751, With Mention of Other Hambletons in England and America It has therefore been thought best, rather than delay for an indefinite time for further research, to publish at once the information thus far obtained, in its present shape, so that those interested can have the benefit of it, and should further research result in such additional information as would warrant it, a supplemental sheet containing it will be printed and sent to those having a copy of this book. The amount of labor required to collect and arrange the material for this record will hardly be appreciated by one not having experience in the same line. Aside from the perusal of numerous geneological works, local histories, biographies and journals, that might throw light on the subject, and the personal examination of records, hundreds of letters have been written, and the material facts in the answers extracted and systematically arranged for publica tion. Frequently several letters would have to be written to the same person, in order to extract the desired informa tion from some who took little interest in the subject. Others, not fully understanding the purpose of the inquir ies, would at once conclude that some property or some large estate coming to the Hambleton family was involved.
