Book Description
Excerpt from Record of Experiments Conducted by the Commissioner of Agriculture in the Manufacture of Sugar From Sorghum: At Rio Grande, New Jersey; Kenner, Louisiana; Conway Springs, Douglass, and Sterling, Kansas, 1888 The bill making an appropriation for experiments in the manufacture of sugar did not become a law until the 19th of July, 1888. At that time it was manifestly impossible for the Department to make any arrangements of its own for the conduct of experiments during the present manufacturing season. It was necessary, if any experiments were to be made at all, that they should be arranged for in connection with work already in progress either by individuals, private corporations, or State experiment stations. The following arrangements were therefore made for the experimental work: (I) A continuation of the experimental work at Rio Grande, N.J., under the direction of Mr. H. A. Hnglies. (2)A series of experiments at Kenuer, La., nuder the direction of Prof. V.C. Stubbs. (3) Experimental work at Douglass, Kans., under the direction of the Douglass Sugar Company. (4) Experimental work at Conway Springs, Kans., under the direction of Mr. E.W. Deming. (5) Experiments in the improvement in the varieties of cane at Sterling?, Kans., under the direction of Mr. A. A. Denton. In addition to the above work arrangements were made for analytical researches under my direction at Douglass, Conway Springs and Sterling, Kans. It was deemed unadvisable at the late date mentioned for the Department to suggest any experimental work or assume any control thereof Having been authorized to arrange for such work in a manner which seemed most advantageous the following directions were given. The work at Rio Grande was placed exclusively in charge of Mr. II. A. Hughes, to be conducted in such a manner as he saw fit for the benefit of the industry. The work which Mr. Hughes proposed to do was on a small scale, with the ultimate idea of making it possible for farmers and others to manufacture sugar without the expense of apparatus usually considered necessary for that purpose. The results of Mr. Hughes's work have been reported by him further on in this bulletin, and a discussion of them will be given in connection with his report. Book Description
Excerpt from Record of Experiments: Conducted by the Commissioner of Agriculture in the Manufacture of Sugar From Sorghum and Sugar Canes at Fort Scott, Kansas, Rio Grande, New Jersey, and Lawrence, Louisiana, 1887-1888 Sir: Complying with your instructions I beg to submit herewith for your approval Bulletin No. 17 of the Division of Chemistry, containing a record of the experiments made by your direction in the manufacture of sugar from sorghum and sugar canes. The bulletin is divided into three parts, viz: Part I, experiments with sorghum at Fort Scott. - Containing the report of M. Swenson; drawings and description of apparatus; a digest of the report of E. B. Cowgill to the State board of agriculture at Topeka, Kans.; and a statement of the action taken by the Department in respect of certain letters patent granted to M. Swenson for the use of lime carbonates in the cells of the battery. Part II, experiments at Rio Grande. - Containing the report of H. A. Hughes, drawings and description of apparatus used, and analytical notes. Part III, experiments in Louisiana. - Containing the report of H. W. Wiley of the results of the experiments conducted at Lawrence, La. In obedience to your further orders, I took charge of the chemical work of the three stations. During the summer of 1887 the necessary apparatus and chemicals were purchased and sent to the several stations. Of my assistants, C. A. Crampton and N. J. Fake were directed to take charge of the analytical work at Fort Scott, and were furnished with written instructions for their guidance in taking samples and the general method of analyses to be followed. F. V. Broadbeut and H. Edson were sent to Rio Grande. They had the same instructions as were given my assistants at Fort Scott. In addition to this I personally directed the beginning of their work. On October 14, 1887, Mr. Broadbent resigned his position in the Department for the purpose of pursuing his studies abroad. Mr. Edson from that date had sole charge of the analytical work until the end of the season. On April 2, 1887, G. L. Spencer was sent to Fort Scott to secure the removal of certain machinery to Lawrence and joined Mr. Barthelemy in the work of preparation at that station. At the close of the work at Fort Scott, Dr. Crampton and Mr. Fake also came to Lawrence to assist in the chemical work at that place.
