Day the Universe Changed

Day the Universe Changed PDF Author: James Burke
Publisher: Hachette UK
ISBN: 031609191X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
The Day the Universe Changed presents a sweeping view of the history of science, technology, and human civilization and examines the moments in history when a change in knowledge radically altered man's understanding of himself and the world around him. James Burke examines eight periods in history when our view of the world shifted dramatically: In the eleventh century, when extraordinary discoveries were made by Spanish crusaders. In fourteenth-century Florence, where perspective in painting emerged. In the fifteenth century, when the advent of the printing press shook the foundations of an oral society. In the sixteenth century, when gunnery developments triggered the birth of modern science. In the early eighteenth century, when hot English summers brought on the Industrial Revolution. In the battlefield surgery stations of the French revolutionary armies, where people first became statistics. In the nineteenth century, when the discovery of dinosaur fossils led to the theory of evolution. In the 1820s, when electrical experiments heralded the end of scientific certainty. Based on the popular television documentary series, The Day the Universe Changed is a bestselling history that challenges the reader to decide whether there is absolute knowledge to discover-or whether the universe is "ultimately what we say it is."

Masks of the Universe

Masks of the Universe PDF Author: Edward Harrison
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9781139437424
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 366

Book Description
To the ancient Greeks the universe consisted of earth, air, fire, and water. To Saint Augustine it was the Word of God. To many modern scientists it is the dance of atoms and waves, and in years to come it may be different again. What then is the real Universe? History shows that in every age each society constructs its own universe, believing it to be the real and final Universe. Yet each universe is only a model or mask of the unknown Universe. Originally published in 2003, this book brings together fundamental scientific, philosophical, and religious issues in cosmology, raising thought-provoking questions. In every age people have pitied the universes of their ancestors, convinced that they have at last discovered the ultimate truth. Does the modern model stand at the threshold of discovering everything, or will it, like all the rest, come to be pitied?

Changing the Universe

Book Description
I wrote this book partly because I listened to several others discuss how using Buddhist concepts had them enter a state of despair as to what happened when they tried to accept the world just as it is. That is only a small part way along on the journey to what the Buddha wanted us to go, but some of us do not appear to get the message. Recent Science certainly supports the bigger picture of how this universe, from all aspects ranging from the very, very small to the totality of the universe itself, support our being far from victims and certainly very powerful agents for change in this wonderful, amazing universe. We cannot change the universe directly because it is so very complex and so highly interconnected that our fiddling with one component might blow up many other processes. While we humans are rapidly evolving into Homo spiritus, the loving humans, from the thinking but fearful Homo sapiens, we do not (and never will) know enough to make direct changes and not mess things up very badly indeed. We certainly are far from powerless, or victims, however! We can change our own, local energy fields and do amazing things once we are sufficiently evolved. Locally has a whole new meaning when we are talking about what Mother Theresa used to do to a whole hall full of people. The Dali Lama can do the same thing because of his enormous spiritual presence. There is an explosion in the number of us who are becoming so spiritually-powerful that we can do such things with our personal power. Our real impact, however, is in what we can do to the primary processes of the universe, which are Information-based, not the secondary processes of Energy and matter. In my guided writing, I came to call this essence of the universe Pure Information. It is dimensionless and more thought-like and form-like than what most scientists consider when doing Traditional Science. This essence has long been discussed in Philosophy as The Akashic Field. Evin Lazlo now renames it as The Akasha. This top-down set of fields of Information is everywhere and it instantaneously communicates to everything, everywhere in the universe. It stores all thoughts and actions forever, undiminished and then 'in-forms' Energy and matter as well as our minds. It is this in-forming process that allows the universe to be so well ordered and also to continue to keep all of the universe interconnected as One. We are always adding to this Information, and through it can command great power.
