Internet traffic keeps increasing in the past years and it is dominated by various multimedia applications with different requirements. Due to the explosion of information, traditional network architecture cannot meet the requirement of the traffic trends. Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology has greatly increased the bandwidth of the optical network by merging hundreds of wavelengths into a single fiber. However, the traditional topology of the network restricts the development of advanced network technologies. Software-Defined Optical Networking (SDON), inspired by Software-Defined Networking (SDN), is a promising solution for the problem. In this dissertation, self-resilient reconfigurable optical network is proposed to support multiple switching modes in SDON. A reliable retransmission mathematical model is developed in the proposed network to evaluate the delay of the transmission and the buffer occupancy in the router. Besides, network security becomes more and more important in information transmission. Classical cryptography is based on the complexity of computation. With the increasing power of supercomputers and the development of quantum computers, classical cryptography is becoming more and more vulnerable. Compared to classical cryptography, quantum cryptography is based on the law of physics, and in the only means with provable security. This dissertation is the first to analyze the impact of noise as well as practical attenuated laser sources on multi-photon quantum cryptography protocols. The results provide insights in developing practical quantum cryptography hardware systems.

Transport of information through a multimode optical fibre raises challenges when one wants to increase the data traffic using many spatial modes due to modal cross-talk and dispersion. Instead of considering those complex mixing of modes as a detrimental process, in this dissertation, we harness its mode mixing to process quantum optical information. We implement a reconfigurable linear optical network, a fundamental building block for scalable quantum technologies, based on an inverse photonic approach exploiting the technology of wavefront shaping. We experimentally demonstrate manipulation of two-photon quantum interference on various linear optical networks across both spatial and polarization degrees of freedom. In particular, we experimentally show the zero-transmission law in Fourier and Sylvester interferometers, which are used to certificate the degree of indistinguishability of an input state. Moreover, thanks to the ability to implement a non-unitary network, we observe the photon anti-coalescence effect in all output configurations, as well as the realization of a tunable coherent absorption experiment. Therefore, we demonstrate the reconfigurability, accuracy, scalability and robustness of the implemented linear optical networks for quantum information processing. Furthermore, we study the statistical properties of one-and two-photon speckles generated from various ground-truth states of light after propagating through a multimode fibre. These statistical properties of speckles can be used to extract information about the dimensionality, purity, and indistinguishability of an unknown input state of light, therefore allowing for state classification. Our results highlight the potential of complex media combined with wavefront shaping for quantum information processing.

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) provides a method for 2 parties to exchange keys for encryption purposes. Unlike conventional schemes which rely on unproven mathematical complexity, the security of QKD is guaranteed by laws of physics. This thesis studies and demonstrates the feasibility of using QKD over conventional metropolitan and access networks to enable data security. This thesis consists of 6 chapters. Chapter 1 briefly describes the history of QKD. It also introduces the idea of using QKD for data security over conventional networks and identifies spontaneous Raman scattering as the main challenge to be overcome when designing QKD systems for use on conventional networks. Chapter 2 provides background information on QKD. It explains the physics which enable secure QKD. Chapter 3 is dedicated to the system components used in this PhD. Their physical principles are discussed. Chapter 4, 5 and 6 are experimental chapters where practical implementations of QKD systems over conventional networks will be presented.
