These became a favourite anchorage with the Admiral; and the sight of the ships passing on their route thither, or seeking the open sea again, often charmed the lonely philosopher of Longo Sardo from his studies. He thus rapturously concludes one of his letters to Dr. Scott: " The sentinel warns me that he sees you in the distance--I fling down my pen to seize eagerly a miserable pasteboard telescope, which can only very feebly aid my sight--but my heart flies far beyond my obscure glass, to present my most respectful homage to my Lord Duke Nelson, and to renew to you with ardour sentiments of the most profound respect."
