Book Description
Excerpt from Recollections of a Missionary in the Great West The dean is dead now, but the young man will never forget him. He was a great hearted, manly, Christian man, able, devoted, hard-working, and so beloved by all who came in contact with him that the papers said of him after he entered into life, what Motley said of William the Silent: When he died the little children cried in the streets. And the words were exactly true. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Reminiscences of a Texas Missionary (Classic Reprint)

The Reminiscences of a Texas Missionary (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: P. F. Parisot

ISBN: 9781331866657
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
Excerpt from The Reminiscences of a Texas Missionary In the month of. March, 1852, six Oblate Fathers and one Lay Brother, accompanied by four Nuns of the Incarnate Word, two Ursuline Sisters, four Brothers of Mary, and eighteen Seminarians, bade adieu to "La Belle France" and went aboard the sailing vessel "La Belle Assise," at Havre, en route for Texas. "My native land adieu! adieul I cannot always stay with you, stay with you." The wharf is crowded, thousands are there, in expectation of an unwonted spectacle. The saintly Bishop Odin, in his episcopal robes, blesses the band of missionaries from the pier and then goes back to Paris, in the interest of his diocese. The ship leaves its moorings, the cannon booms, the Ave Maris Stella is sung by thirty-five voices, "Adieu ma belle France." The sacrifice is made joyfully, "Hilarem datorem diligit Deus." Some sing, "Partons pour la Syrie." I saw tears trickling down the cheeks of a tender-hearted seminarian, as he cast a last glance on the coast of France disappearing on the horizon. "Adieu, mother." Fifty-two days between the immensity of the firmament and the immensity of the ocean taught us to appreciate the fixity of mother earth. Memoirs of Mr. Wesley's Missionaries to America

Memoirs of Mr. Wesley's Missionaries to America PDF Author: P. P. Sandford
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331846475
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 410

Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of Mr. Wesley's Missionaries to America: Compiled From Authentic Sources The history of the labours and sacrifices of the holy men employed by Mr. Wesley in the great work of spreading the gospel in this country must increase in importance and interest with the lapse of time. In this history we see the great work of God, which has brought such vast multitudes to the knowledge of the truth, in its incipient stages. And when we look back from our present position to the infancy of American Methodism, we are led, with devout admiration, to exclaim, "What hath God wrought?" The present work is compiled from authentic documents, by Rev. P.P. Sandford, who has spared no pains to make it acceptable and useful. The matter in general is left, as it is fit that it should be, in its original state; and having been composed by plain, practical men, who were more concerned to relate such facts as would magnify the grace of God, than to gratify the taste of mere scholars, they did not, in their narratives, affect the graces of composition. The style of these Memoirs, consequently, will not always bear the test of a comparison with the models of modern taste. All this notwithstanding, it may be presumed that the work will be joyfully greeted by the members and friends of our church as a fine illustration of primitive Methodism, and will remain, to the end of time, among the permanent records of the rise and progress of that great revival of Scriptural holiness, which we devoutly pray may never decline, until the knowledge of the Lord shall fill the earth as the waters fill the great deep. Memoirs of the Rev. Walter M. Lowrie

Memoirs of the Rev. Walter M. Lowrie PDF Author: UNKNOWN. AUTHOR
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781331361343
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 522

Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of the Rev. Walter M. Lowrie: Missionary to China The Editor of this Memoir has done little more than to select and arrange the papers of his beloved son. A few remarks have been made with the view of noticing his early years, and connecting the different periods of his short but active and not unvaried life. The plan adopted was to let him speak for himself in his letters and journals; though some letters from his missionary brethren, and others in the ministry at home, who knew him, have been given at the end of the volume. From these every reader will form his own estimate of his character and acquirements. A few of the many letters from Christian friends, as the sad intelligence of his death reached them, have also been inserted. His letters for the most part were hastily written, many of them in the confidence of Christian and endeared friendship. His journals also were written at the dates mentioned, and his other engagements gave him no time to correct or copy them. Two volumes of private journals were found after his death among his papers; but they were destroyed, in accordance with his special written request to his friend Rev. M. S. Culbertson, or either of his surviving colleagues. The work has been stereotyped, and the entire expense of this edition has been defrayed by Christian friends, to whom his memory is very dear. Whatever profit may arise from the sale will be applied to the enlargement of the Ningpo mission, under the care of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church. Memoirs and Remains of the Reverend Walter Inglis

Memoirs and Remains of the Reverend Walter Inglis PDF Author: William Cochrane

ISBN: 9781331387114

Pages : 332

Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs and Remains of the Reverend Walter Inglis: African Missionary and Canadian Pastor Nearly a year ago I was asked by the office-bearers of Stanley Street Church, Ayr, on behalf of the congregagation and other friends, to prepare a Memoir of their late beloved pastor. I hesitated to undertake the task for many reasons. There were other brethren associated with Mr. Inglis for a longer period, who knew him more intimately - although they could not love him more than the compiler of this volume - and were better fitted for the work. The materials also for a Memoir were comparatively scanty. Mr. Inglis kept no written record of his life, either in Africa or Canada, and at first sight it seemed almost hopeless to present anything like a complete and worthy portrait of the man. At the same time, I felt that if ever the life of a Canadian pastor should be written, it was that of Walter Inglis. He stood, in many respects, alone. Commanding in outward appearance, the inner man was far above the average of his age. Under a somewhat abrupt manner, and associated with an original mode of speech, his nature was most tender and gentle and lovable. To see the man in public and in Church courts was one thing; to know him as a friend, and hear him at the family altar, was quite another. In the preparation of this volume I have been assisted by many kind friends, to whom my thanks are due. The chapters giving an account of Mr. Inglis' early apprentice and college days, as well as some portions in other parts of the Memoir, have been supplied by his brother, the Rev. William Inglis, of Toronto. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
