There was a grand scramble to gather them together, and to get everything safely inside the house before the rain came, which soon followed in torrents. I went on to Amritsar, where the hotel was not bad. At breakfast one of the officers told me he had been there some months, and never yet had had the curiosity to see the Golden\ Temple I went at once, having picked up a garry-driver at the station, who talked some English. It was a real gem, half white marble lace-work, and half gilt copper, with rich dark hangings and carpets, built out in the middle of a clear lake, smooth as glass, in which every line was accurately reflected a long causeway of marble leading to it was always crowded with finely-dressed people. The lake was surrounded by trees and picturesque buildings. The holy book of the Sikhs was kept in the temple, and no shoes were admitted all round the sacred tank. I set to work at once on a sketch, and no one interfered with me the first day, but on the second they said, No orders give chair, and would not let me sit, even on my own, anywhere. Excerpt from Recollections of a Happy Life, Vol. 1 of 2: Being the Autobiography of Marianne North This story of my sister's life was the work of her first two years at Alderley. She put it into the hands of her friend, Sir Joseph Hooker, who undertook to negotiate with Messrs. Macmillan for its publication. They agreed to take it upon condition of certain retrenchments, which she was then far too ill to make, and the manuscript was put by till after her death. As it now stands, her earlier journeys in Europe, Egypt, and Syria have been cut out entirely and the first chapters compressed. The later and most interest ing journeys remain, except for minor points, which had to be revised, just as she left them. By the advice of her oldest friend (and my own), Mr. Francis Galton, the spelling of Indian names and places has been altered to the system now adopted by the Government of India. These chapters have been kindly revised for me by our friend and neighbour here, Major General M. R. Haig. Mr. Galton had the still more puzzling names of Java verified and corrected for the book at the Royal Geographical Society. CHAPTER V PALESTINE AND SYRIA 1866 Started with the smallest possible luggage in a great Eussian steamer for Jaffa, finding Frank Skinner and his mother were to be our companions on board. We were a merry little party, and we did our best to understand the poor old captain, whose French was twothirds Eussian, an over-allowance of incomprehensibility quite impossible to fight against; though he strove hard to entertain us it required some tact to laugh and cry in the right place. He showed us a quantity of sketch-books filled by himself from his cabin window with elaborately-finished pencil sketches, but as he was perpetually thumbing and turning them over, they were beginning to have marvellous atmospheric effects but very little outline. We stayed a few hours at Port Said, looking at the big stones, and when we reached Jaffa wondered how we should ever get through the surf and rocks and the rogues at the landing-place. We had almost given up trying in despair when the first boat brought our remedy in Hadji Ali, a dragoman we had seen on the Nile, who was just packing off his party for Constantinople, and had all his tents and horses ready to take us on. Of course he was delighted at a fresh start, and we to find a protector in a man whose name was so well known and spoken of, so he piloted us through the rocks, surf, and streets, and out to the beautiful garden plain beyond, where we found his late party taking their last luncheon in his tents, and they gave him the best of characters and to us some food, after which we went to the Consulate to rest through the heat of the day, while they packed themselves off.
