Book Description
Excerpt from Recollections of a Happy Life, Vol. 1 of 2: Being the Autobiography of Marianne North This story of my sister's life was the work of her first two years at Alderley. She put it into the hands of her friend, Sir Joseph Hooker, who undertook to negotiate with Messrs. Macmillan for its publication. They agreed to take it upon condition of certain retrenchments, which she was then far too ill to make, and the manuscript was put by till after her death. As it now stands, her earlier journeys in Europe, Egypt, and Syria have been cut out entirely and the first chapters compressed. The later and most interest ing journeys remain, except for minor points, which had to be revised, just as she left them. By the advice of her oldest friend (and my own), Mr. Francis Galton, the spelling of Indian names and places has been altered to the system now adopted by the Government of India. These chapters have been kindly revised for me by our friend and neighbour here, Major General M. R. Haig. Mr. Galton had the still more puzzling names of Java verified and corrected for the book at the Royal Geographical Society. Book Description
Excerpt from Recollections of a Happy Life, Vol. 2 of 2: Being the Autobiography of Marianne North It became quite dark, and the paintings were blown all about the garden in every direction. There was a grand scramble to gather them together, and to get everything safely inside the house before the rain came, which soon followed in torrents. I went on to Amritsar, where the hotel was not bad. At breakfast one of the officers told me he had been there some months, and never yet had had the curiosity to see the Golden\ Temple I went at once, having picked up a garry-driver at the station, who talked some English. It was a real gem, half white marble lace-work, and half gilt copper, with rich dark hangings and carpets, built out in the middle of a clear lake, smooth as glass, in which every line was accurately reflected a long causeway of marble leading to it was always crowded with finely-dressed people. The lake was surrounded by trees and picturesque buildings. The holy book of the Sikhs was kept in the temple, and no shoes were admitted all round the sacred tank. I set to work at once on a sketch, and no one interfered with me the first day, but on the second they said, No orders give chair, and would not let me sit, even on my own, anywhere. However, I had done most of my work, and did not care. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Marianne North was a Victorian figure of some consequence. An amateur botanist and painter, she journeyed to the world's farthest reaches, to its ancient and new civilizations. She also wrote one of the major travel accounts of the Victorian period. Written after she retired from travel because of ill health, Recollections of a Happy Life incorporates journals and letters from throughout her travelling years. The huge manuscript left at her death was reduced and edited by her sister and published in 1892 in three volumes. Volume 1 is reprinted here. In a new Introduction, Susan Morgan raises issues of gender, imperialism, and the Victorian approach to science.

Book Description
This book examines the perceptions of European travelling writers about southern Western Australia between 1850 and 1914. Theirs was a narrow vision of space and people in the region, shaped by their individual personalities, their position in society, and the prevailing discourses and ideologies of the age. Christian, Enlightenment, and Romantic philosophies had a major influence on their responses to the land – its cultivation and conservation, and its aesthetic qualities – and on their views of both indigenous and settler colonial society – their class and assumptions of race and ethnicity. The travelling men and women perpetuated an idealised view of a colonised landscape, and a “pioneer” community that eliminated class struggle and inequality, even though an analysis of their observations suggests otherwise. Nevertheless, although limited, their narratives are invaluable as a reflection of opinions, attitudes and knowledge prevalent during an age of imperialism. Their perspectives reveal unique viewpoints that differ from those of immigrants who wrote about their hopes and fears in making a new life for themselves. These travellers were economically secure, literate and educated; foundations which provide an insight into the way power and privilege, implicit in their writings, governed the way they imagined Western Australia in the colonial and immediate post-federation period. The tinted lenses through which European travelling writers narrowly observed space and people, presented a mythical, imagined sense of southern Western Australia.

Not illustrated. 1892 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VI TENERIFFE--CALIFORNIA--JAPAN--SINGAPORE The winter after my return from Brazil I devoted to learning to etch on copper, Mr. Edwin Edwardes, who had illustrated the old inns of England, kindly giving me a few lessons. Friends seemed always accumulating round me and making life very enjoyable. I was called down to Netley to help to nurse my cousin, Dudley North, who had returned from Ashantee with three wounds and much fever, though he always maintained the savage who shot him was a gentleman, for he gave a yell first to warn him of the danger. He lived through it, thanks to the care of the doctors and the nursing of Mrs. Deeble, the lady-superintendent there, who sat up with him for fourteen nights. She was a wonderful woman, looking always as if she had nothing to do, though she seldom slept more than one hour of the twenty-four at that busy time. Every bed in the hospital was full, the field in front also covered with tents full of invalids, and more were constantly coming home. I stayed about six weeks, partly at Colonel Gordon's (the Governor), partly at a lodging over the postoffice. When my work there was over I returned home and paid visita among my friends and relations in England, Ireland, and Scotland, going to the meeting of the British Association at Belfast among other things; and after hearing TyndaU's wonderful opening address, I heard a sermon preached on it in a country church on the text, "It were better that man had never been born." The winter was an unusually cold one. After the experiences of the last two in Jamaica and Brazil I found it quite unbearable, so at last I determined to follow the sun to Teneriffe. M. E. and I started on New Year's day, 1875, in hard frost and snow, steaming from Liverpool in a...
