Book Description
Workers' compensation is an important part of U.S. social insurance. Workers' compensation pays for medical care, rehabilitation, and cash benefits for workers who are injured on the job or who contract work-related illnesses. It also pays benefits to families of workers who die of work-related causes. This article presents new data on developments in workers' compensation in 2004. In that year, employers' costs for workers' compensation grew faster than combined payments for cash benefits and medical treatment for injured workers. Employers' costs for workers' compensation rose by 7.0 percent and the benefit payments rose by 2.3 percent, in 2004. Workers' compensation programs are designed and administered by the states. They vary across states in terms of statutes, mix of occupations, fluctuations in employment, wage rates, health care practices, number and severity of injuries, and reporting procedures.
