Book Description
A new profile analysis package for use with the Thomson scattering data on ISX-B has recently been implemented. The primary feature of this package is a weighted least squares fitting of temperature and density data to generate a representative curve, as opposed to the previous hand-fitting technique. The changes will automate the manner in which data are transmitted and manipulated, without affecting the calculational techniques previously used. The computer programs have also been used to estimate the sensitivity of various plasma quantities to the accuracy of the Thomson scattering data.

Study of the Effects of Photon Statistics on Thomson Scattering Data

Book Description
A computer code has been developed which simulates the counting statistics of a Thomson scattering measurement. The scattered and background signals in each of the wavelength channels are assumed to obey Poisson statistics, and the spectral data are fitted to a Gaussian curve using a nonlinear least-squares fitting algorithm. This method should be applicable to Thomson scattering measurements in which the signal-to-noise ratio is low due to low signal or high background. Thomson scattering data from the S-1 Spheromak have been compared to this simulation, and they have been found to be in good agreement. This code has proved to be useful assessing the effects of counting statistics relative to shot-to-shot variability in producing the observed spread in the data. It was also useful for designing improvements for the S-1 Thomson scattering system, and this method would be applicable to any measurements affected by counting statistics. 5 refs., 1 fig.

Data Analysis in Astronomy III

Data Analysis in Astronomy III PDF Author: V. di Gesù

ISBN: 1468456466

Pages : 406

Book Description
In the book are reported the main results presented at the Third International Workshop on Data Analysis in Astronomy, held at the EUore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture, Erice, Sicily, Italy, on June 20-27,1988. The Workshop was the natural evolution of the two previous ones. The main goal of the first edition (Erice 1984) was to start a scientific interaction between Astronomers and Computer Scientists. Aim of the second (Erice 1986) was to look at the progress in data analysis methods and dedicated hardware technology. Data analysis problems become harder whenever the data are poor in statistics or the signal is weak and embedded in structured background. Experiments collecting data of such a nature require new and non-standard methodologies. Possibilistic approaches could be merged with the statistical ones, in order to formalize all the knowledge used by the scientists to reach conclusions. Moreover, the last decade has been characterized by very fast developments of Intelligent Systems for data analysis (knowledge based systems, ... ) that would be useful to support astronomers in complex decision making. For these reasons, the last edition of the workshop was intended to provide an overview on the state of the art in the data analysis methodologies and tools in the new frontieres of the astrophysics (y-astronomy, neutrino astronomy, gravitational waves, background radiation and extreme cosmic ray energy spectrum). The book is organized in two sections: - Data analysis methods and tools, - New frontieres in astronomy.

Thomson Scattering Diagnostic Analyses to Determine the Energetic Particle Distributions in TFTR. Final Report

Thomson Scattering Diagnostic Analyses to Determine the Energetic Particle Distributions in TFTR. Final Report PDF Author:

Book Description
Lodestar has been an active participant in the low power Collective Thomson Scattering (CTS) diagnostic at TFTR in collaboration with MIT. Extensive studies were conducted regarding the use of gyrotron scattering as a low cost diagnostic for both energetic ions and alpha particles on TFTR. The numerical scattering code has been improved and compared with similar code developed at JET. The authors have participated and assisted in the CTS experiments through onsite visits and have successfully performed most of the data analysis tasks remotely. Through their analysis on the initial data base accumulated, they are able to understand qualitatively the general features of the anomalous large scattered signal, have proposed an explanation for its generation mechanism, and have suggested a potential new use of CTS as an edge diagnostic.
