Book Description
In the course of factory trials and laboratory research programs a number of important observations have been made which could influence the processibility and performance of EPM applications. The purpose of this paper is to bring these to your attention for consideration. In addition, this paper will introduce new technology which has been developed for ethylene-propylene terpolymers (designated EPDM by ASTM) especially for low voltage and jacketing applications. These are a low Mooney type of excellent processing suitable for mineral filled insulations and a high Mooney type best suited for jacketing applications. (Author).

Propylene Polymers for Insulation of Communication Cable

Propylene Polymers for Insulation of Communication Cable PDF Author: B. V. Harris

Pages : 29

Book Description
Polyolefins have long been recognized as a very fertile field in which to search for plastic dielectrics. Some of the reasons for this fact include the availability of these materials in large quantities from numerous suppliers; their relatively low price, which makes them attractive for large-volume applications; and their excellent electrical insulating properties, resulting in part from their high degree of nonpolarity. Originally, low-density polyethylene was used exclusively among the polyolefins for this application. The promise of better mechanical properties led to the introduction of high-density polyethylene, sometimes called linear polyethylene, for both insulation and jacketing of wire and cable. Both high- and low-density polyethylene are currently in wide use for these applications. Low-density polyethylene is most frequently used for conductor insulation while high-density polyethylene is more widely used as a jacketing compound, reflecting the relative strong points of the 2 materials. Polypropylene has better electrical properties than either high- or low-density polyethylene. It also has a much higher glass-transition temperature, however, which results in more brittleness than is found in polyethylene. Initially this brittleness caused the rejection of polypropylene in most electrical applications. Further work has largely overcome the brittleness problem through the development of impact-modified polypropylenes and propylene-ethylene copolymers, a new class of materials also included under the general heading of propylene polymers. ISBN: 9789051994995
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 368

Book Description
The subject Fibre optic cables forms a major part of the conference and continues to progress with many new developments. Topics include new designs and cable formats, very high-density fibre cables for the access network and buildings, special cables for particular applications, installation in ducts or as aerial cables, replacement and repair of cables, field testing, PMD measurements and OTDR, network monitoring and fault finding, test equipment, and connector and splicing techniques. The planning, installation and maintenance of cables and associated hardware form the vital core of a successful network. This subject addresses the issues of planning and design using new tools such as artificial intelligence, reliability, preventive maintenance and strategies for maintenance, installation issues and costs. Materials development is vital for the communications cable industry. Subjects considered are: -new materials technology -polymeric materials coating and filling technology -fabrication techniques and extrusion -materials related to cable performance -smoke and fire performance -environmental performance The final part of this publication deals with fibre technology. This includes new fibre designs such as: - multicore fibres - fibre fabrication - mechanical strength and reliability - coating technology - colouring of fibre coatings - new materials

Fire Retardancy of Polymeric Materials, Second Edition

Fire Retardancy of Polymeric Materials, Second Edition PDF Author: Charles A. Wilkie
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1420084003
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 840

Book Description
When dealing with challenges such as providing fire protection while considering cost, mechanical and thermal performance and simultaneously addressing increasing regulations that deal with composition of matter and life cycle issues, there are no quick, one-size-fits-all answers. Packed with comprehensive coverage, scientific approach, step-by-step directions, and a distillation of technical knowledge, the first edition of Fire Retardancy of Polymeric Materials broke new ground. It supplied a one-stop resource for the development of new fire safe materials. The editors have expanded the second edition to echo the multidisciplinary approach inherent in current flame retardancy technology and put it in a revised, more user-friendly format. More than just an update of previously covered topics, this edition discusses: additional fire retardant chemistry developments in regulations and standards new flame retardant approaches fire safety engineering modeling and fire growth phenomena The book introduces flame retardants polymer-by-polymer, supplemented by a brief overview of mode of action and interaction, and all the other ancillary issues involved in this applied field of materials science. The book delineates what, why, and how to do it, covering the fundamentals of polymer burning/combustion and how to apply these systems and chemistries to specific materials classes. It also provides suggested formulations, discusses why certain materials are preferred for particular uses or applications, and offers a starting point from which to develop fire-safe materials.
