Collected Works of Shinya Inou‚

Collected Works of Shinya Inou‚ PDF Author: Shinya Inou‚
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812703888
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1019

Book Description
This book collects the publications of Shinya lnou‚, pioneering cell biophysicist and winner of the 2003 International Prize for Biology. The articles cover the discovery, and elucidate the behavior in living cells, of the dynamic molecular filaments which organize the cell and play a central role in cell division. Other articles report on the development of microscopes, especially those using polarized light and digital image enhancement, which make possible studies of the ever-changing molecular architecture directly in living cells. This book also contains many high quality photo-micrographs as well as an appended DVD with an extensive collection of video movies of active living cells. After training in Tokyo and at Princeton University, Dr Inou‚ has held teaching positions at the University of Washington, Tokyo Metropolitan University, University of Rochester, Dartmouth Medical School, and University of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and currently holds the title of Distinguished Scientist at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

Advanced Imaging in Biology and Medicine

Advanced Imaging in Biology and Medicine PDF Author: Ch.W. Sensen
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540689931
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 447

Book Description
A picture says more than a thousand words. This is something that we all know to be true. Imaging has been important since the early days of medicine and bi- ogy, as seen in the anatomical studies of Leonardo Da Vinci or Andreas Vesalius. More than 100 years ago, the ?rst noninvasive imaging technologies, such as K- rad Roentgen’s X-ray technology, were applied to the medical ?eld—and while still crude—revolutionized medical diagnosis. Today, every patient will be exposed to some kind of advanced imaging technology such as medical resonance imaging, computed tomography or four-dimensional ultrasound during their lifetime. Many diseases, such as brain tumors, are initially diagnosed solely by imaging, and most of the surgical planning relies on the patient imagery. 4D ultrasound is available to expecting parents who wish to create unique early memories of the new baby, and it may soon be used for the morphometric diagnosis of malformations that may one day be treatable—inutero! Light and electron microscopy are unequal brethren, which have contributed to most of our knowledge about the existence and organization of cells, tissues and microorganisms. Every student of biology or medicine is introduced to the fascinating images of the microcosm. New advances have converted these im- ing technologies, which were considered by many to be antiquated, into powerful tools for research in systems biology and related ?elds.

Meso-optics - Foundations And Applications

Meso-optics - Foundations And Applications PDF Author: Lev Markowitch Soroko
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 981449884X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 427

Book Description
The monograph covers various meso-optical elements, diffraction free light beams, localized electromagnetic fields, gravitational lens, meso-optical devices for transportation of the synchrotron radiation, meso-optical microscopes for high energy elementary particle physics, and the history of meso-optics. Some integral transforms useful in meso-optics are presented in the Appendix. The author is an active participant of many investigations in meso-optics and provides an up-to-date encyclopedic review of the theoretical and experimental investigations on Meso-Optics (optics of the conical wave fields).
