Jamaica

Jamaica PDF Author: International Monetary Fund. Monetary and Capital Markets Department
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1484387821
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 87

Book Description
The macroeconomic environment has improved, reflecting the authorities’ efforts, supported by an IMF arrangement. Previously, years of high fiscal deficits, public enterprise borrowing, and financial sector bailouts led to rapid government debt accumulation, crowded out private credit, increased financial dollarization, and stifled economic growth. Fiscal discipline has been essential to reduce public debt (to about 100 percent of GDP). With government debt accounting for a sizable share of financial institutions’ assets, falling interest rates on government debt are leading to a search for yield. Also, entrenched structural obstacles, including high crime, bureaucratic processes, insufficient labor force skills, and poor access to finance still constrain economic growth. The authorities have made good progress in implementing the 2006 FSAP recommendations. Work on the regulatory framework has significantly advanced in several areas such as securities dealers’ activities, powers to the Bank of Jamaica (BoJ), payment systems, and the introduction of the centralized securities depository. However, the crisis management framework and risk-based supervision work has been lagging.

Jamaica

Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1484351061
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 126

Book Description
This 2018 Article IV Consultation highlights that Jamaica’s GDP growth is estimated to have been a disappointing 0.5 percent in 2017. Weakness in agriculture, slow recovery in mining, and a deceleration in manufacturing offset growth in tourism and construction. The growth forecast is being revised down to 0.9 percent in FY17/18 and about 2.25 percent in the medium term. Inflation remains well-anchored. Higher food prices resulting from flooding have begun to unwind. The current account deficit remains relatively low (at 2.8 percent of GDP in FY17/18) and it is expected to shrink over the medium-term, as oil prices remain contained and tourism earnings improve.

Jamaica Meltdown

Jamaica Meltdown PDF Author: Wilberne Persaud
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 0595385346
Category : Financial crisis
Languages : en
Pages : 143

Book Description
Unwarranted optimism guided Jamaica's indigenous financial sector institutions. They converted cash to speculative investments. Driven more by egos than economics they built grand Head Offices-dubbed the 'edifice complex' by one of Jamaica's most successful businessmen. Some of their activities skirted legal lines. The Courts adjudged others outright fraud. This general attitude and euphoric behaviours always precede crash. Jamaica Meltdown explores Jamaica's financial sector crisis of the 1990s and its aftermath. A fully emancipated, indigenous financial sector combined with and fuelling release of the people's creative energies could have produced true economic development. Instead it was pushed into a tailspin and crashed. Rather than progress, retarded development ensued. The Jamaican economy and people now faced the tremendous cost of rebuilding confidence-paying down non-productive debt precisely when education, technology, and health initiatives for the intensified global economy warranted highest priority. Jamaica Meltdown is an earnest look at the history of this financial crisis from a vantage point internal to the unfolding reality by an author with a strong grasp of finance theory.

Annual Report on Exchange Arrangements and Exchange Restrictions 1987

Annual Report on Exchange Arrangements and Exchange Restrictions 1987 PDF Author: International Monetary Fund. Monetary and Capital Markets Department
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 0939934973
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 571

Book Description
This report discusses developments in the international exchange rate and restrictive systems. The period covered by this report is 1986 and, for major developments, the first quarter of 1987. The report highlights that in 1986, protectionist pressures for trade restrictions in the industrial countries continued to be fueled by large and widening bilateral trade imbalances, persistently high levels of unemployment, and a widespread slowing of economic growth. In spite of continued resistance by some governments, quantitative restrictions were tightened in many industrial countries. There were nevertheless several positive developments in the trade and exchange system.
