Man and Woman, One in Christ

Man and Woman, One in Christ PDF Author: Philip Barton Payne
Publisher: Zondervan Academic
ISBN: 0310525322
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 514

Book Description
Does Paul teach a hierarchy of authority of man over woman, or does he teach the full equality of man and woman in the church and home? In Man and Woman, One in Christ, Philip Barton Payne answers this question and more, injecting crucial insights into the discussion of Paul’s view of women. Condensing over three decades of research on this topic, Payne’s rigorous exegetical analysis demonstrates the consistency of Paul’s message on this topic and its coherence with the rest of his theology. Payne’s exegetical examination of the Pauline corpus is thorough, exploring the influences on Paul, his practice as a church leader, and his teachings to various Christian communities. Paul’s theology, instruction, and practice consistently affirm the equal standing of men and women, with profound implications for the church today. Man and Woman, One in Christ is required reading for all who desire to understand the meaning of Paul’s statements regarding women and their relevance for Christian relationships and ministry today. This work has the potential of uniting the church on this contentious issue.

Paul and Pseudepigraphy

Paul and Pseudepigraphy PDF Author: Stanley E. Porter
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004258477
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 390

Book Description
In Paul and Pseudepigraphy, an international group of scholars engage open questions in the study of the Apostle Paul and those documents often deemed pseudepigraphal. This volume addresses many traditional questions, including those of method and the authenticity of several canonical Pauline letters, but they also reflect a desire to think in new ways about persistent questions surrounding pseudepigraphy. The focus on pseudepigraphy in relationship to Paul affords a unique opportunity to address this innovative inclination, not readily available in studies of New Testament pseudepigraphy in general. Regarding these concerns, new approaches are introduced, traditional evidence is reassessed, and some new suggestions are offered. In addition to Pauline letters, treatments of related non-canonical Pauline pseudepigraphs are included in discussion.

The Good News of the Apocalypse

The Good News of the Apocalypse PDF Author: Ione L. Sedinger
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 145025473X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 383

Book Description
Today there is a renewed interest in the Biblical book of Revelation-which naturally brings to mind the word "apocalypse." Because Revelation is best known for its wild symbolic imagery, some people will naturally assume this title to imply the same approach. This isn't the case; the word can also mean simply prophetic, and that certainly describes the Bible. We are daily presented with the bad news of the world. In contrast, the Bible is the Good News-the rain that cleanses our soul, the amazing grace assuring us that God is still in control regardless of the situation. Through studying his Word we are programming our conscience for right or wrong in thought and action. That is the reason we need not only to read but to study the Bible daily. The Good News of the Apocalypse offers assistance with that study with a brief, comprehensible discussion of every book in the bible, arising from Sedinger's experience with a study group for teenagers. Everything in life is under God's control, and so Pastor Sedinger refers to life as God's Dance. The Good News is that Jesus came to teach us how to dance with God.

Jew Among Jews

Jew Among Jews PDF Author: Kimberly Ambrose
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1498218474
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 221

Book Description
Misunderstanding of Paul had started already in his lifetime, and his letters offer many examples of this. Throughout the centuries, Paul has continued to be misunderstood by both Jews and Gentiles, especially in relation to his view of the law and the covenant. Paul has often been misunderstood because his form of argument, his use of Scripture, his view of Jews and Gentiles in Christ (especially of those Jews who were not convinced that Jesus was Messiah), and his view of what constitutes true Judaism do not seem to conform to our expectations and perceptions of the apostle. We have been accustomed to read his letters as of one who was emancipating people from Judaism, as one who sought to obliterate all ethnic and other distinctions rather than maintaining the identity of Jews and Gentiles even in Christ. By building on some of the insights of the New Perspective, and developing other more recent insights as well, a more consistent and credible Paul as a first-century Diaspora Jew organizing a mission to Gentiles will be presented.

Rethinking the Dates of the New Testament

Rethinking the Dates of the New Testament PDF Author: Jonathan Bernier
Publisher: Baker Academic
ISBN: 1493434675
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 292

Book Description
This paradigm-shifting study is the first book-length investigation into the compositional dates of the New Testament to be published in over forty years. It argues that, with the notable exception of the undisputed Pauline Epistles, most New Testament texts were composed twenty to thirty years earlier than is typically supposed by contemporary biblical scholars. What emerges is a revised view of how quickly early Christians produced what became the seminal texts for their new movement.
