Anetso, the Cherokee Ball Game
Author: Michael J. Zogry
Publisher: UNC Press Books
ISBN: 0807898201
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 329
Book Description
Anetso, a centuries-old Cherokee ball game still played today, is a vigorous, sometimes violent activity that rewards speed, strength, and agility. At the same time, it is the focus of several linked ritual activities. Is it a sport? Is it a religious ritual? Could it possibly be both? Why has it lasted so long, surviving through centuries of upheaval and change? Based on his work in the field and in the archives, Michael J. Zogry argues that members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation continue to perform selected aspects of their cultural identity by engaging in anetso, itself the hub of an extended ceremonial complex, or cycle. A precursor to lacrosse, anetso appears in all manner of Cherokee cultural narratives and has figured prominently in the written accounts of non-Cherokee observers for almost three hundred years. The anetso ceremonial complex incorporates a variety of activities which, taken together, complicate standard scholarly distinctions such as game versus ritual, public display versus private performance, and tradition versus innovation. Zogry's examination provides a striking opportunity for rethinking the understanding of ritual and performance as well as their relationship to cultural identity. It also offers a sharp reappraisal of scholarly discourse on the Cherokee religious system, with particular focus on the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation.

The Great Adventure
Author: Jack Popjes

Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 372
Book Description
We lived with the Canela people to give them the same life choices billions of people around the world already have: 1. To use modern medicine, or not. 2. To learn to read and write, or not. 3. To read the message of love from their Creator, or not. The Canelas gladly used modern medicine when they saw the wonderful results. They taught us their language and accepted the alphabet we developed. We experienced no major problems. When we began to provide God’s Word in their language, however, powerful unseen forces blocked progress. “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil.” (Eph 6:12 NIV)

ISBN: 9780803275751
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 356
Book Description
American lore has slighted the cowgirl, although at least one can still be found in nearly every ranching community. Like her male counterpart, she rides and ropes, understands land and stock, and confronts the elements. The writer and photographer Teresa Jordan traveled sixty thousand miles in the American West, talking with more than a hundred authentic cowgirls running ranches and performing in rodeos. The result is a fascinating book that also situates the cowgirl in history and literature. A new preface and updated bibliography have been added to this Bison Book edition.
