The U.S. Air Force has conducted research and development work since the early 1960s to improve the capability to repair bomb damaged airfields. As part of the in-house testing for the Rapid Runway Repair (RRR) Program, the Air Force Engineering and Services Center (AFESC) has conducted Development, Test and Evaluation on interim systems for crater and spall repairs. The two interim crater repair methods, precast slab and fiberglass mat over crushed stone, were tested. The precast slab tests were conducted in two phases, using two generations of the slab technology. The fiberglass mat over crushed stone tests compared two different polyurethane resins for use in rainy or high water table conditions. In addition to these tests of the repair methods, a comparative test of compaction equipment performance was conducted. The final test series evaluated the proposed polymer concrete formulations for the interim spall repair system, including water-tolerant polyurethane, furfuryl alcohol, and magnesium polyphosphate.

The use of precast concrete is a well-established construction technique for beams, floors, panels, piles, walls and other structural elements. The advan tages of precasting include excellent quality control, economical large scale production, improved construction productivity (especially in adverse weather conditions) and immediate structure availability. These advantages have been recognized for precast concrete raft pavement units (raft units) since their introduction in the 1930s. In the last ten years there has been a considerable increase in the use ofraft units, especially in their range of applications, their analysis and their design. However, the description of these developments has been published in academicjournals and conference proceedings which are not readily available to practising raft unit pavement design engineers. The North Field 87 Rapid Runway Repair Test, conducted at North Field SC, was a concurrent Developmental Test and Evaluation (DT & E) and Initial Operational Test and Evaluation (IOT & E) of four Rapid Runway Repair system. The DT & E portion of the test consisted of a Folded Fiberglass Mat Test and an Upheaval Measurement Test. The Folded Fiberglass Mat Test evaluated the performance of a folded fiberglass mat under aircraft trafficking. Two explosively formed craters were repaired with polyester folded fiberglass mats and trafficked with a maximum of 110 combined F-15 and F-16 aircraft passes. One mat was instrumented to record mat and anchor bolt loads during aircraft trafficking. Instrumentation results are reported in Volume II. Mat anchoring, hinge orientation, and mat reaction to jet blast were also examined. The upheaval measurement test evaluated three methods of determining upheaval. The standard stringline, modified stringline, and Dipstick pavement profiler were evaluated for speed and accuracy. The IOT & E tests, including the Hand-Mixed Polymer Spall Repair Test and the Minimum Operating Strip Marking Test, were conducted by the United States Air Force Tactical Air Warfare Center. (sdw).
