Book Description
Written with a personal touch, the book focuses on 35 years of Valmik Thapar's engagement with tigers in Ranthambhore National Park and across India. Thapar takes us on a journey of a lifetime from Ranthambhore's ancient and hallowed history and the story of the last three decades and more of tiger conservation in India to the questionable role of the government to more heartening stories of how local villagers took up conservation-related activities in the quest to find solutions to save the striped predator. This book is a tribute to the late Fateh Singh Rathore. Intertwined with the narrative is the story of a special friendship between Thapar and Rathore-a partnership that witnessed the duo fighting tooth and claw to try and turn adversity in the tiger's favour.

Biodiversity of Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve Rajasthan

Biodiversity of Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve Rajasthan PDF Author: V. Singh
Publisher: Scientific Publishers
ISBN: 9387307891
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 429

Book Description
The present book on the Biodiversity of Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve deals with 539 species of higher plants and 361 species of animals (vertebrates). Besides geographical position and topography, the abiotic components, viz. geology, soils, water, climatic conditions etc., which determine the composition of biota in an ecosystem, have been discussed in details. Correct and valid names have been adopted for the floral and faunal elements along with local and English names. The keys have been provided for plant species from infra-specific to family level for easy identification. The short diagnostic description, phenology, ecology and distributional aspects have been provided under each plant species. Besides statistical analysis of floral composition, the phytogeographical and biological spectra have also been worked out to determine the routes of migration and phytoclimate respectively. Bioperspective value of the Reserve has been assessed to determine the economic potentiality and sustainable utilization of bioresources. The faunal diversity includes vertebrate fauna only, arranged in a classified manner. The shelter and feeding habits along with dependency of fauna on vegetation have been provided to determine plant-animal relationship and flow of energy. Details about endemic and threatened species of plants and animals, along with causes of threats, have been given for proper management of the Reserve. About 107 colour photographs of habitat and plants and animals with 36 illustrations of plant species have been provided. Several maps, pie charts, graphs, figures etc, along with data-tables, are appended to illustrate the findings. It is hoped that the book will prove a milestone in the management of the Reserve.

Tiger PDF Author: Stephen Mills
Publisher: Firefly Books
ISBN: 1552979490
Category : Tiger
Languages : en
Pages : 176

Book Description
A rare look at a magnificent predator. Supple, powerful, long, lean and intense, tigers are one of the world's most beautiful predators. Though fierce and efficient, an estimated 5,000 tigers are all that survive in the wild. Tiger provides a thorough understanding of this remarkable animal based on firsthand observations. Using stunning photography and maps, the book reveals how shrinking habitats and decreasing food supplies are forcing tigers to live in unnaturally high densities, often with deadly results. Tiger draws on the latest research and extensive field experience to deal with every aspect of its behavior: Social structures Breeding patterns and family life Martial arts-like hunting tactics Dietary favorites and oddities Communication and interaction. Two hundred and fifty photographs capture tigers in range of activities: devouring prey in the jungle, at play with cubs, warding off scavengers, at rest and on the prowl. Fascinating commentary offers intriguing new ideas about supporting this critically endangered animal, a first step in ensuring that they never die out.

Book Description
Valmik Thapar first went to Ranthambhore, in 1976, at the age of twenty-three. He was a city boy, unsure of what lay ahead. When he entered the forest, which would go on to become one of the last strongholds of wild tigers, it had a profound effect on him, changing his life forever. For the next forty years, he studied nearly 200 Ranthambhore tigers, spending every waking moment in close proximity to these magnificent animals. Of the various tigers he observed a handful became extra special and it is these which come to glorious life in this book. They include Padmini, the Queen Mother, the first tiger the author got to know well; Genghis, the master predator, who invented a way of killing prey in water, the first time this had been observed anywhere in the world; Noon, one of his all-time favourites, who received her name because she was most active in the middle of the day; Broken Tooth, an exceptionally gentle male; Laxmi, a devoted mother, whose methods of raising her cubs revolutionized tiger studies; Machli, the most famous tigress in Ranthambhore and several more.
