Book Description
About The Book The idea of politics hardly finds an expression elsewhere as clearly as in Mahābhārata. This work thus investigates the political thought explicit in Śānti-Parva and emphasizes that Mahābhārata is a text in the study of politics, apart from the perception of it being a great epic and a text of high literary value. Whatever be the notion of politics we contemplate upon, it finds an articulation in Mahābhārata. As the Greek tradition of thinking is the base of Western politics, Śānti-Parva of Mahābhārata represents the Indian notion of political thinking, though there remain many similarities and dissimilarities between the two systems. This volume navigates one to how to read Mahābhārata as a political text; the idea of political thoughts, the constituting principles of politics and the political institutions in Śānti-Parva; and the relevance of these political thoughts in modern time. Topics such as daṇḍanīti, origin of state, the seven elements of state, functions of state, types of state, kinship, judiciary and administration are discussed in detail, among many other issues of political importance. The book collects, analyses and examines the internal evidences from Śānti-Parva and also from other parvans of Mahābhārata to reach a decisive conclusion, making the work a composite result of textual analysis, related literature and subjective contemplation. It clearly shows that the idea of politics is not separated from the idea of ethics. Rather they are intertwined. About the Author Dr Priyanka Pandey is an upcoming Sanskrit scholar with a penchant for serious researches on Indian classics. She got her PhD for the thesis, “Perspectives of Rājadharma in Mahābhārata: A Critical Analysis” from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. This book Rājadharma in Mahābhārata with Special Reference to Śānti-Parva is an offshoot of her research project. Dr Pandey has presented articles in many national and international seminars and has ten articles published in journals/books of repute to her credit.

Book Description
About Book: The ajñātavāsa was one of the toughest periods for the Pandavas who had to work as servants in the court of king Virāṭa. The situational dynamics dictated that they had to remain docile and dormant in the face of admonishments. This book deals with the narrative of Virāṭa Parva written by sage Vyasa. It analyses how the great kings of the Kuru dynasty spent their time of adversity without transgressing Dharma. The book dispels certain popular myths which have been created through translations and films, and which are far from the original version of the Veda Vyasa. Since the ultimate objective of this book is to spread the message of Dharma, it will be sold as a gift pack to be distributed on all auspicious events. About the Author: Prof Karanam Nagarajarao is a retired Professor from Alliance University, Bangalore. Raja Yudhisthira

Raja Yudhisthira PDF Author: Kevin McGrath
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 150170821X
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 424

Book Description
In Raja Yudhisthira, Kevin McGrath brings his comprehensive literary, ethnographic, and analytical knowledge of the epic Mahabharata to bear on the representation of kingship in the poem. He shows how the preliterate Great Bharata song depicts both archaic and classical models of kingly and premonetary polity and how the king becomes a ruler who is viewed as ritually divine. Based on his precise and empirical close reading of the text, McGrath then addresses the idea of heroic religion in both antiquity and today; for bronze-age heroes still receive great devotional worship in modern India and communities continue to clash at the sites that have been—for millennia—associated with these epic figures; in fact, the word hero is in fact more of a religious than a martial term. One of the most important contributions of Raja Yudhisthira, and a subtext in McGrath's analysis of Yudhisthira’s kingship, is the revelation that neither of the contesting moieties of the royal Hastinapura clan triumphs in the end, for it is the Yadava band of Krsna who achieve real victory. That is, it is the matriline and not the patriline that secures ultimate success: it is the kinship group of Krsna—the heroic figure who was to become the dominant Vaisnava icon of classical India—who benefits most from the terrible Bharata war.

Protocol in Mahabharata

Protocol in Mahabharata PDF Author: Devi Dayal Aggarwal
Publisher: Gyan Publishing House
ISBN: 9788178351773
Category : Etiquette in literature
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
Mahabharata is a comprehensive Puran, projecting all aspects of human life- spiritual, political, administrative and social-as these existed in ancient period. This book Protocol in Mahabharata compares the same with the prevailing aspects in modern times. Spiritual protocol indicates protocol within Gods, seniority in Gods, God-being relation; political protocol indicates the duties of a raja in war and peace, his relation with the subjects and other rajas; laws of war and peace and international agreements. In administrative protocol the raja is said to be bound with the advice of his Secretaries, of course with the veto power. The administrative set up and judicial working appears to be more comprehensive than what it exists today. The social protocol envisages the strict following of the Varnasharama Dharma and any breach was punishable by law. For the sake of maintaining flow and continuity, aspects not having direct relation with protocol have been included in the text to make it a précised book of Mahabharata. The book is particularly informative and educative in view of the content of Bhagwat Gita and Bhishama-Yudhisthra discussions covering all aspects of human life, whose following shall make life most enjoying.
