ISBN: 9180948243
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 545

Book Description
In D. H. Lawrence's epic novel The Rainbow, we are thrown into a world of passion, forbidden love, and destructive conventions. Through the story of three generations of the Brangwen family, Lawrence explores the complex and often contradictory ties between desire, love, and freedom. In the picturesque countryside of England, we meet Ursula Brangwen, a young woman longing to find her place in the world and to explore her own desires. Through her quest for independence and true love, she is confronted with moral dilemmas and social prejudices that threaten to shatter her dreams. With his bold and challenging prose, Lawrence breaks taboos, leading to The Rainbow being banned in Britain for eleven years after its publication in 1915. It is a provocative and thought-provoking novel that leaves no one untouched. Through its compelling characters and vivid portrayals of societal norms and expectations, Lawrence offers a profound reflection on the power of love and the individual's struggle for freedom. D. H. LAWRENCE [1885-1930] was one of the greatest English writers of the 20th century. Lawrence's depictions of erotica and sexuality led to several of his novels being banned and censored. He lived in self-imposed exile for four years due to the reception of his novels.

ISBN: 1479616907
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 641

Book Description
Rainbows Amidst the Clouds is a devotional journey through the Bible, contemplating selected passages in every book from Genesis to Revelation. One of the best ways to maintain a close personal relationship with the Lord is to practice a consistent daily devotional program, and this book is one tool to help achieve that goal in the year ahead. As a baby boomer herself, Dr. Barcelo has written this devotional with a view toward relating to the spiritual interests of those who are living out their golden years. Barcelo’s rich and varied background as an educator, administrator, missionary, and college professor has given her many experiences from which to draw as she grapples with how to remain spiritually healthy and continue to be relevant in the cause of God as a retired person. Readers, however, will find that this book is applicable to students of the Bible in all stages of life, since it covers a wide range of topics, depending upon the selected text for each day. Such diverse themes as parenting, divorce, missionary work, leaving and returning to the church, equality, stewardship, aging, and retirement are all touched upon in this post-pandemic devotional. With each passing day, search with Dr. Barcelo amid the clouds life sometimes brings, for the blessings of God’s guidance, and His rainbows of promise and hope, found only as we take time to thoughtfully walk through His Word.

The Rainbow Parts 1 and 2

The Rainbow Parts 1 and 2 PDF Author: D. H. Lawrence
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521009447
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 346

Book Description
D. H. Lawrence started 'The Sisters' in March 1913, wrote four different versions and claimed to have discarded 'quite a thousand pages' before completing The Rainbow in May 1915. The novel was suppressed, just over a month after publication, in November 1915. Mark Kinkead-Weekes gives the composition history and collates the surviving states of the text to assess the damage done to Lawrence's great novel, and to provide a text as close to that which the author wrote as is now possible. The final manuscript, revisions in the typescript and the first edition are recorded in the full textual apparatus so the reader can follow the development of the novel and evaluate what outside interference might have done to it. Appendixes give the earliest, unpublished fragments from the first two versions and a newly discovered report and summary of the third. Published in two volumes.

The Dragon and the Rainbow

The Dragon and the Rainbow PDF Author: Robert Blust
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004678301
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 369

Book Description
Modernization and conversion to world religions are threatening the survival of traditional belief systems, leaving behind only mysterious traces of their existence. This book, based upon extensive research conducted over a period of nearly four decades, brings scientific rigor to one of the questions that have always attracted human curiosity: that of the origin of the dragon. The author demonstrates that both dragons and rainbows are cultural universals, that many of the traits that are attributed to dragons in widely separated parts of the planet are also attributed to rainbows, and that the number and antiquity of such shared traits cannot be attributed to chance or common inheritance, but rather to common cognitive pathways by which human psychology has responded to the natural environment in a wide array of cultures around the world.
