Mandela
Author: Martin Meredith
Publisher: PublicAffairs
ISBN: 158648866X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 689
Book Description
Nelson Mandela stands out as one of the most admired political figures of the twentieth century. It was his leadership and moral courage above all that helped to deliver a peaceful end to apartheid in South Africa after years of racial division and violence and to establish a fledgling democracy there. Martin Meredith's vivid portrayal of this towering leader was originally acclaimed as "an exemplary work of biography: instructive, illuminating, as well as felicitously written" (Kirkus Reviews), providing "new insights on the man and his time" (Washington Post). Now Meredith has revisited and significantly updated his biography to incorporate a decade of additional perspective and hindsight on the man and his legacy and to examine how far his hopes for the new South Africa have been realized. Published as South Africa celebrates 100 years since its founding and hosts the 2010 World Cup, Nelson Mandela is the most thorough and up-to-date account available of the life of its most revered hero.

Negotiated Revolutions
Author: George Lawson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351915495
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 303
Book Description
Straightforward histories of post-revolution States have all too often failed to provide sufficient context to rescue revolution, both as concept and practice, from the misplaced triumphalism of the contemporary world. In Negotiated Revolutions George Lawson marks a definitive departure in the study of radical political and socio-economic change, presenting a unique comparative analysis of three transformations from authoritarian rule to market democracy. Through the lens of international sociology the book critically considers the large scale processes of social and political revolution, bringing three apparently distinct transformations, from seemingly disparate authoritarian regimes and geographies, under a common rubric. With unique and novel conceptual analysis the book accurately locates both the potential and actuality of radical change in contemporary world affairs, processes usually mistakenly subsumed under the general framework of 'transitology'.

Power Games
Author: John Sugden
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136402055
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 317
Book Description
Critical and radical perspectives have been central to the emergence of the sociology of sport as a discipline in its own right. This ground-breaking new book is the first to offer a comprehensive theory and method for a critical sociology of sport. It argues that class, political economy, hegemony and other concepts central to the radical tradition are essential for framing, understanding and changing social and political relations within sport and between sport and society. The book draws upon the disciplines of politics, sociology, history and philosophy to provide a critical analysis of power relations throughout the world of sport, while offering important new case studies from such diverse sporting contexts as the Olympics, world football, boxing, cricket, tennis and windsurfing. In the process, it addresses key topics such as: * nations and nationalism * globalisation * race * gender * political economy. Power Games can be used as a complete introduction to the study of sport and society. And will be essential reading for any serious student of sport. At the same time, it is a provocative book that by argument and example challenges those who research and write about sport to make their work relevant to social and political reform.

The South African State Transformed?
Author: Louis A. Picard
Publisher: UCT Press
ISBN: 1991236042
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 360
Book Description
This book examines the nature of the 1994 political transition in South Africa and its impact on post-apartheid South Africa. Specifically, it examines the failures of liberalism within the context of the transitional process that led to the institution, if not the practice, of a non-racial state in 1994. The term liberal is an eclectic term defining a several of views, political and economic. We use the term here within context, but essentially define it as a commitment to open views, the willingness to consider change, and to value basic human rights. The nature of institutional change in South Africa as it moved towards a democratic state would influence whether South Africa would succeed as a newly industrializing pluralist democratic country or collapse into yet another African failed state. As South Africa moves toward its fourth decade of majority rule, the view towards the future is much less promising than it was in 1994.

The various chapters present in-depth case studies that deal with the South African government, local NGOs, universities and tourism. The book reveals in detail the local struggles of the historically disadvantaged and the "powers-that-be", to try and live up to the ideals of the New South Africa.

Public Administration and Governance in Democratic South Africa
Author: Izimangaliso Malatjie
Publisher: UJ Press
ISBN:
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 412
Book Description
There is a national emergency, and it has become more pronounced as South Africa faces challenges of Ethical leadership in both the private and public sector. Recently the Zondo Commission, Public Investment Corporation (PIC) Commission and Courts of Law released reports that cast light on the conduct of public officials. There have also been several reports by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) dealing with the same matter. This phenomenon is not only unique to South Africa. Reports of multinational companies that have been implicated in unethical and corrupt abound. These include corporate scandals such as those of Enron, WorldCom, Nortel, and AIG. These malfeasances have demonstrated abundantly that corporate leaders are not immune to unethical behaviour (Bedi, Alpasla & Green, 2015; Naidoo, 2012a). What this showed is that the issue of ethics is important in the public sector.
