The Railways of Victoria 1854-2004
Author: Robert Stuart Lee
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780522856996
Category : Railroads
Languages : en
Pages : 304
Book Description
Victoria was the first Australian colony to open a steam railway, in 1854, and for the rest of the 19th century it remained the continent's most advanced and intensive railway. Melbourne was Australia's first city to have suburban railways, which were also the first to be electrified, beginning in 1919. This book tells the story of the early railways opened in the wake of the gold rush to Ballarat and Bendigo, extravagantly engineered as none ever would be in the future. It then moves on to examine the role of railways in the development of the colony during the 19th century, when railway policy often dominated political discourse. Railway history both reflected and made Victorian history as a whole, especially during the boom and bust of the 1880s and 1890s. During the Clapp era of the 1920s and 1930s, Victorian railways projected an aura of sophisticated and style, whereas after World War II there was constant challenge and readjustment, as other transport modes became dominant. This culminated in a long crisis through the last decades of the 20th century, of which emerged a railway system radically restructured in almost every way. The colourful characters, political intrigues and enormous social impact of Victoria's railways, as well as their constantly changing and fascinating technology, are major themes of this book.

Along the Old Ghan Line

Book Description
The twelve-hundred kilometre narrow gauge railway from Port Augusta to Alice Springs served the Outback of Australia for 100 years. Starting in 1878 as the Port Augusta and Government Gums Railway, it became the Great Northern Railway and then the Central Australian Railway. The once or twice a week passenger train became known as the 'Ghan'.Partially by-passed in the 1950s, the old narrow gauge line was closed in 1980 and the rails pulled up. Two sections have survived - the first 40 kms through Pichi Richi Pass which operates as a Heritage Railway and the final 23 kms into Alice Springs, which currently no longer operates.Although the rails have gone, there is still much to see along the route. The author has compiled this Guide to the old railway - what is there and what was there and how to find locations, mostly through his own travels and with his photographs taken over more than fifty years.

A History of the South Australian Railways

Book Description
William Alfred Webb landed in South Australia in 1922. His assignment: to rehabilitate the ailing State-owned railway system. In next to no time he found one very obvious weakness; an inadequate, run down and completely inefficient locomotive fleet. Taking the bull by the horns he right away appointed Fred Shea from Victoria as his Chief Mechanical Engineer, setting Fred on the road to becoming one of Australia's great engineers. The outcome: forty-five steam locomotives and three steam wrecking cranes that set standards of excellence that lasted until the South Australian Railways as a corporate body was finally dissolved on 8 December 1975. Not only did Shea excel as a steam locomotive engineer but during the Second World War (and after) he stood out as a giant in the construction of warplanes, munitions and in due course, diesel-electric locomotives.
