Radiological Decontamination Methods and Equipment for Cold-weather Regions
Author: L. K. Donovan
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 97
Book Description
The information contained in this report is designed to be used along with NAVDOCKS TP-PL-13, Radiological Recovery of Fixed Military Installations, in order to adapt TP-PL-13 to cold-weather conditions. This report is to act as the basis for a cold-weather supplement to TP-PL-13 which will be published by the Bureau of Yards and Docks. The effects of cold weather upon the operation of the basic recovery plan are pointed out; the major problem areas most likely to be encountered in recovering a fixed military installation subjected to radiological contamination in cold climatic conditions are outlined, and methods and equipment to be used for radiological decontamination are indicated and illustrated for various cold-weather conditions. The judgements are based in large part on appended reports of tests in Alaska by NCEL, which were designed to fill in gaps where further experimental work was needed to augment existing decontamination information.

Simulated Cold Weather Radiological Decontamination of Recovery Equipment
Author: Alfred E. Hanna

Languages : en
Pages : 17
Book Description
Tests were conducted in Cold Chamber, in which compressed air, steam, vacuum, water, and antifreeze solution were used to remove a fluorescent fallout simulant from a large tractor at temperatures down to minus 10 degrees F. It is concluded that antifreeze solution and water, if warmed, are the most effective materials; steam may be acceptably effective, and air and vacuum have limited use.

U.S. Government Research Reports
Handbook of Radioactive Contamination and Decontamination
Author: J. Severa
Publisher: Newnes
ISBN: 0080875068
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 389
Book Description
The objective of this book is to present a comprehensive picture, first of the fundamentals of general contamination of solid surfaces and water, and in the second part, to review the main practical procedures and means of applied decontamination used in the fields of activity. The most emphasis on radioactive contamination deals with decontamination of the operational facilities in nuclear power plants. Other special decontamination branches of current interest are also dealt with briefly. The art of decontamination is being enriched by the progress achieved in relevant scientific disciplines and employs these relative advances. The current volume discusses in detail the following trends in decontamination: Firstly, the development and use of new decontamination methods that are highly efficient, non-agressive to decontaminated materials, and economically feasible; secondly, the utilization of progressive elements of automation and robotics; thirdly, the development and use of such decontamination formulations that would minimize the volume of wastes and would produce wastes in a form in which they could be either easily further treated or safely disposed of without risk to human health or the environment; finally, the choice of suitable materials used both for the structural and the technological parts of nuclear installations with regard to their minimal contaminability and ease of decontamination.

A Prototype Civil Defense Manual for Radiological Decontamination of Municipalities. Volume 2. Decontamination Operations
Author: Mario V. Cammarano
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 132
Book Description
The report contains practical, operational information on the decontamination of radioactive fallout. It discusses the type of surfaces which will be encountered, the methods best suited to their decontamination, and the special considerations required by cold weather. It describes the three basic principles of fallout decontamination; cleaning the surface, removing the surface, and covering the surface. The various methods for achieving decontamination are categorized as wet or dry methods, and are discussed individually in detail. Team make-ups, equipment requirements, and operational procedures are covered. The pages devoted to each method are organized as separate, specialized Decontamination Team operation handbooks. It is written for zone Decontamination leaders and Decontamination Team captains. It will be of value also, however, to Planners and others interested in Radiological Recovery.
