Book Description
"The study of neutron capture cross-sections is of interest in nuclear reactions. Of major importance in this study is the compound nucleus theory - a concept which was first proposed by Bohr. When an incident particle bits the nucleus, the compound nucleus is formed. This compound nucleus decays subsequently, and the decay is independent of the mode of its formation. In other words the compound nucleus has no memory of the past. This is called 'The Independence Hypothesis' by Weisskopf. Experiments do indicate that at low energies the compound nucleus is very often formed. The compound nucleus picture explains the very narrow resonances observed in elastic scattering of slow neutrons." --

Book Description
Radiative capture of fast neutrons by the deformed nuclei /sup 165/Ho and /sup 238/U was measured over the 7- to 15-MeV incident neutron energy range. The .gamma.-ray detector was a large NaI(T1) anti-Compton spectrometer, and time-of-flight techniques were used to suppress background. The total radiative capture cross section exhibits an energy dependence that clearly indicates the importance of the direct-semidirect reaction mechanism. Theoretical calculations compare favorably with experimental observations. However, the shapes of the observed .gamma.-ray spectra differ from those calculated, indicating problems in estimating the distribution of single-particle strength for these deformed nuclei.
