Troubling Topics, Sacred Texts

Troubling Topics, Sacred Texts PDF Author: Roberta Sterman Sabbath
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110650614
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 719

Book Description
Abrahamic scriptures serve as cultural pharmakon, prescribing what can act as both poison and remedy. This collection shows that their sometimes veiled but eternally powerful polemics can both destroy and build, exclude and include, and serve as the ultimate justification for cruelty or compassion. Here, scholars not only excavate these works for their formative and continuing cultural impact on communities, identities, and belief systems, they select some of the most troubling topics that global communities continue to navigate. Their analysis of both texts and their reception help explain how these texts promote norms and build collective identities. Rejecting the notion of the sacred realm as separate from the mundane realm and beyond critical challenge, this collection argues—both implicitly and sometimes transparently—for the presence of the sacred within everyday life and open to challenge. The very rituals, prayers, and traditions that are deemed sacred interweave into our cultural systems in infinite ways. Together, these authors explore the dynamic nature of everyday life and the often-brutal power of these texts over everyday meaning.

A Bibliography of the Finds in the Desert of Judah, 1970-95 PDF Author: Donald Parry
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004350217
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 573

Book Description
This volume contains a bibliography of the research on the Dead Sea Scrolls published during the last 25 years, and as such it provides scholars with an indispensable tool for further research. Although originally planned as a continuation of B. Jongeling's A Classified Bibliography of the Finds of the Desert of Judah 1958-1969, the materials are presented in a different way in order to avoid unnecessary duplications of entries. Each bibliographical entry is alphabetically listed in the first part of the book and is provided with an identification number which allows for multiple classifications. The second part offers a sophisticated classification of the materials by themes, topics and key words, but also by manuscript numbers and titles of the compositions as well as by authors.

The Bible, Qumran, and the Samaritans

The Bible, Qumran, and the Samaritans PDF Author: Magnar Kartveit
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110581418
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 222

Book Description
Discoveries on Mount Gerizim and in Qumran demonstrate that the final editing of the Hebrew Bible coincides with the emergence of the Samaritans as one of the different types of Judaisms from the last centuries BCE. This book discusses this new scholarly situation. Scholars working with the Bible, especially the Pentateuch, and experts on the Samaritans approach the topic from the vantage point of their respective fields of expertise. Earlier, scholars who worked with Old Testament/Hebrew Bible studies mostly could leave the Samaritan material to experts in that area of research, and scholars studying the Samaritan material needed only sporadically to engage in Biblical studies. This is no longer the case: the pre-Samaritan texts from Qumran and the results from the excavations on Mount Gerizim have created an area of study common to the previously separated fields of research. Scholars coming from different directions meet in this new area, and realize that they work on the same questions and with much common material. This volume presents the current state of scholarship in this area and the effects these recent discoveries have for an understanding of this important epoch in the development of the Bible.

Qumran-Messianism

Qumran-Messianism PDF Author: Society for New Testament Studies. Seminar Group on the Dead Sea Scrolls and Christian Origins
Publisher: Mohr Siebeck
ISBN: 9783161469688
Category : Dead Sea Scrolls
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
The publication of this collection of articles on Qumran Messianism by a team of international scholars marks the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947. The authors offer a new approach to the messianic expectations expressed in the Qumran literature by incorporating also those texts and fragments which have been available only since 1992 and by understanding them within the context of ancient Judaism and early Christianity. Most of the contributions originate from the Seminar on 'Qumran and Early Christianity' of the 'Societas Novi Testamenti Studiorum' of the past few years chaired by James Charlesworth and Hermann Lichtenberger. The present volume therefore stands at the very front of the academic discussion on the relation between ancient Judaism and early Christianity by concentrating on some of their central religious concepts: the messianic figures and latterday expectations as expressed in the Qumran writings.
