Mathematical Modelling of Physical Systems

Mathematical Modelling of Physical Systems PDF Author: Michel Cessenat
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319947583
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 517

Book Description
Comprehensive and thorough, this monograph emphasizes the main role differential geometry and convex analysis play in the understanding of physical, chemical, and mechanical notions. Central focus is placed on specifying the agreement between the functional framework and its physical necessity and on making clear the intrinsic character of physical elements, independent from specific charts or frames. The book is divided into four sections, covering thermostructure, classical mechanics, fluid mechanics modelling, and behavior laws. An extensive appendix provides notations and definitions as well as brief explanation of integral manifolds, symplectic structure, and contact structure. Plenty of examples are provided throughout the book, and reviews of basic principles in differential geometry and convex analysis are presented as needed. This book is a useful resource for graduate students and researchers in the field.

Asymptotic Modeling of Atmospheric Flows

Asymptotic Modeling of Atmospheric Flows PDF Author: Radyadour Kh. Zeytounian
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642738001
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 405

Book Description
The present work is not exactly a "course", but rather is presented as a monograph in which the author has set forth what are, for the most part, his own results; this is particularly true of Chaps. 7-13. Many of the problems dealt with herein have, since the school year 1975-76, been the subject of a series of graduate lectures at the "Universire des Sciences et Techniques de Lille I" for students preparing for the "Diplome d'Etudes Ap profondies de Mecanique (option fluides)". The writing of this book was thus strongly influenced by the author's own conception of meteorology as a fluid mechanics discipline which is in a privi leged area for the application of singular perturbation techniques. It goes without saying that the modeling of atmospheric flows is a vast and complex problem which is presently the focal point of many research projects. The enonnity of the topic explains why many important questions have not been taken up in this work, even among those which are closely related to the subject treated herein. Nonetheless, the author thought it worthwhile for the development of future research on the modeling of atmospheric flows (from the viewpoint of theoretical fluid mechanics) to bring forth a book specifying the problems which have already been resolved in this field and those which are, as yet, unsolved.

Fluid Mechanics

Fluid Mechanics PDF Author: Jean-Laurent Puebe
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118623126
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 331

Book Description
This book examines the phenomena of fluid flow and transfer as governed by mechanics and thermodynamics. Part 1 concentrates on equations coming from balance laws and also discusses transportation phenomena and propagation of shock waves. Part 2 explains the basic methods of metrology, signal processing, and system modeling, using a selection of examples of fluid and thermal mechanics.

The Mathematical Heritage of Henri Poincare

The Mathematical Heritage of Henri Poincare PDF Author: Felix E. Browder
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821814494
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 478

Book Description
On April 7-10, 1980, the American Mathematical Society sponsored a Symposium on the Mathematical Heritage of Henri Poincari, held at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. This volume presents the written versions of all but three of the invited talks presented at this Symposium (those by W. Browder, A. Jaffe, and J. Mather were not written up for publication). In addition, it contains two papers by invited speakers who were not able to attend, S. S. Chern and L. Nirenberg. If one traces the influence of Poincari through the major mathematical figures of the early and midtwentieth century, it is through American mathematicians as well as French that this influence flows, through G. D. Birkhoff, Solomon Lefschetz, and Marston Morse. This continuing tradition represents one of the major strands of American as well as world mathematics, and it is as a testimony to this tradition as an opening to the future creativity of mathematics that this volume is dedicated. This part contains sections on topological methods in nonlinear problems, mechanics and dynamical systems, ergodic theory and recurrence, and historical material.

Frontiers in Mathematical Analysis and Numerical Methods

Frontiers in Mathematical Analysis and Numerical Methods PDF Author: Jacques-Louis Lions
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812389415
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 306

Book Description
This volume is a collection of articles in memory of Jacques-Louis Lions, a leading mathematician and the founder of the Contemporary French Applied Mathematics School. The contributions have been written by his friends, colleagues and students. The book concerns many important results in analysis, geometry, numerical methods, fluid mechanics, control theory, etc.

Mathematical Topics in Fluid Mechanics

Mathematical Topics in Fluid Mechanics PDF Author: Jose Francisco Rodrigues
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000158039
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
This Research Note presents several contributions and mathematical studies in fluid mechanics, namely in non-Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids and on the Navier-Stokes equations in unbounded domains. It includes review of the mathematical analysis of incompressible and compressible flows and results in magnetohydrodynamic and electrohydrodynamic stability and thermoconvective flow of Boussinesq-Stefan type. These studies, along with brief communications on a variety of related topics comprise the proceedings of a summer course held in Lisbon, Portugal in 1991. Together they provide a set of comprehensive survey and advanced introduction to problems in fluid mechanics and partial differential equations.

Mathematics Without Boundaries

Mathematics Without Boundaries PDF Author: Themistocles M. Rassias
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1493911066
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 783

Book Description
The contributions in this volume have been written by eminent scientists from the international mathematical community and present significant advances in several theories, methods and problems of Mathematical Analysis, Discrete Mathematics, Geometry and their Applications. The chapters focus on both old and recent developments in Functional Analysis, Harmonic Analysis, Complex Analysis, Operator Theory, Combinatorics, Functional Equations, Differential Equations as well as a variety of Applications. The book also contains some review works, which could prove particularly useful for a broader audience of readers in Mathematical Sciences, and especially to graduate students looking for the latest information.

Symmetrization & Applications

Symmetrization & Applications PDF Author: S. Kesavan
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812773932
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 164

Book Description
The study of isoperimetric inequalities involves a fascinating interplay of analysis, geometry and the theory of partial differential equations. Several conjectures have been made and while many have been resolved, a large number still remain open. One of the principal tools in the study of isoperimetric problems, especially when spherical symmetry is involved, is Schwarz symmetrization, which is also known as the spherically symmetric and decreasing rearrangement of functions. The aim of this book is to give an introduction to the theory of Schwarz symmetrization and study some of its applications. The book gives an modern and up-to-date treatment of the subject and includes several new results proved recently. Effort has been made to keep the exposition as simple and self-contained as possible. A knowledge of the existence theory of weak solutions of elliptic partial differential equations in Sobolev spaces is, however, assumed. Apart from this and a general mathematical maturity at the graduate level, there are no other prerequisites.
