Book Description
Excerpt from Quarter Centennial Historical Sketch A review of those early times awakens conflicting emotions in the minds of those participating therein. The Directors, undertaking a work in which they neverbefore had been engaged, saw, afterward, wherein errors of judgment were committed, for which they found some excuse in their right intent and lack of experience. To bring the Seminary to its 'present stage of progress, has cost much care and labor on the part of the Directors and Professors - gladly again to be endured for completing a work so well begun. Book Description
Excerpt from Centennial Celebration: June 1, 1914 The Reverend Eben S. Stearns, principal of the Academy at the celebration of her semi - centennial, began his historical sketch for the occasion by noting that at the opening of the Academy in 1814 the country was at war: that, in much more terrible form, 1864 found her again absorbed in the endless horror of strife. The present sketch was to have been pre faced by a heartfelt Thank God that a second fifty years had put us beyond even the fear of blood. But - 1814, 1864 and 1914, and are we still to dream only of a land whose inhabitants shall have ceased to learn war any more? We trust that by the intro duction of proper text books as guides and models, as also charts, pictures, drawing and other aids, we may see advancement made in this direction from year to year, until brought to a high degree of perfection. Book Description
Excerpt from Cranston: A Historical Sketch Certain sketches of Cranston's history, among them the one con tained in the history of Providence County edited by Bayles, state that there were a number of movements looking toward a division of the town of Providence and the erection of new township in the western portion before the one which was finally successful in 1754. If this is the case, there is nothing in the state or town records bearing thereon, although as mentioned above Williams proposed in October of 1660 as a method of settling the territorial dispute which arose then a new pur chase from the original Indian owners and a new settlement in the dis triot in question, a plan which was rejected by the town of Providence. It was natural, however, that as the population of the western part of the town of Providence increased there should arise discussions of the, disadvantages of living remote from the place where the public bus' ness was transacted. Freeholders' meetings were held quarterly in the town of Providence, always in the compact portion at the head of the hay, and court was also held there. It is said that had the people in the westerly part of the town been able to agree upon a name for their proposed township they would have pressed their petition for a division of the old town long before they did. Some, however, insisted that a new town he formed under the name of Mashapaug, others wanted to take in part at Warwick and call it all Pawtuxet. Meshanticut and. Pocasset also had their supporters, and altogether the difficulty of a? Choice was serious enough to block action for nearly a century. In 1732' the supporters of a division came near success, but the name proved too much and action was again delayed. Excerpt from A Historical Sketch of Chester Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa: Read at the Quarter-Centennial, July 4th, 1881 In the summer of 1856, that is, twenty-five years ago this summer, Mr. Sherman's shanty was occupied by two men named Atwood and Rich, of Cape Cod, Mass and familiarly known as the Cape Cod boys. They raised the first crop of corn ever raised in Chester, on the aforesaid ten acres of Mr. Sherman's. These Cape Cod boys brought with them water-lily bulbs andi pine seeds from the Cape; and the beautiful water-lilies now growing in Bear Creek, and the pine trees on the premises of Henry and Jason Sherman and Albert Williams are from the seed brought by them from Cape Cod.' Atwood and Rich, in the autumn of 1856, built a shanty near Mr. Bigelow's residence, but after remaining in it a little while they returned East.
