The study of the relationship between the structure, morphology and properties of polymer films has significantly progressed in recent years through the use of a number of phyiscal techniques - some new and some old. These methods include small and large angle x-ray diffraction, bire fringence, light scattering, infrared dichroism, fluorescence polarization, light and electron microscopy and interferrometry. This collection of papers, most of which were presented at a symposium at the Boston American Chemical Society Meeting in April, 1972, represent a collection of recent studies using many of these methods by some of the leading scientists in their fields. It is evident that these various techniques permit the study of various aspects of film structure such as crystal structure and orientation, amorphous orientation, the interrelation of crystalline and amorphous regions in lamellar, fibrillar, and spherulitic superstructure and the relationshi. p of these structural variables to the mechanical and optical properties of the films. Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the though that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemi nation. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 37 (thesis year 1992) a total of 12,549 thesis titles from 25 Canadian and 153 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 37 reports theses submitted in 1992, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

A theory for scattering from polymer films having nonrandom-orientation fluctuations is presented that involves a parameter epsilon, that varies between +1 for rodlike orientation correlations and - 1 for disklike correlations. A value of epsilon = 0 corresponds to random correlations where the probability of optic axes being parallel is independent of the relative orientation of the axes and their line of separation. This is the previous case of random-orientation fluctuations that have been previously treated and that lead to correlated regions within the polymer having average spherical shape. The variation of the scattering with the angle characterizing the orientation of a polarizer in the incident light beam is found to depend upon the parameter epsilon. Intensity variations are calculated for the cases where an analyzer in the scattered beam has its depolarization direction either parallel or perpendicular to that of the polarizer. This approach is useful for describing the morphology of a crystalline polymer with organization less than that of a spherulitic polymer but greater than random. (Author).
