Failure Analysis of Composite Materials with Manufacturing Defects

Failure Analysis of Composite Materials with Manufacturing Defects PDF Author: Ramesh Talreja
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1003834531
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 281

Book Description
In contrast to metals, a composite material acquires an internal structure where the imprint of its manufacturing process history is a significant part of the internal structure’s makeup and in many cases determines how the material responds to external impulses. The performance for which a composite material is designed must therefore be assessed with due consideration to the manufacturing-induced features in the material volume. Failure theories based on homogenized composites cannot deliver reliable methodologies for performance assessment. This book details approaches that depart from traditional treatments by accounting for manufacturing defects in composite materials. It discusses how manufacturing defects are produced and how they affect the performance of composite materials. Serves as the only book to bring knowledge on manufacturing and failure modeling together in a coherent manner. Guides readers on mechanisms-based modeling with a focus on defects. Treats statistical simulation of microstructure with defects aimed at physical modeling. Covers manufacturing methods for polymer matrix composites. Describes failure modes in unidirectional composites and laminates in the presence of defects. Discusses fatigue damage in the presence of defects. This book is aimed at researchers in industry and academia in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, and materials science and engineering. It also serves as a reference for students taking advanced courses in composite materials.

IUTAM Symposium on Microstructure-Property Interactions in Composite Materials

IUTAM Symposium on Microstructure-Property Interactions in Composite Materials PDF Author: R. Pyrz
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401100594
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 447

Book Description
The IUT AM Symposium on Microstructure Property Interactions in Composite Ma- rials was held during the dates 22nd to 25th August 1994 in Rebild Bakker Conference Centre, situated in the heart of one of Denmark's most beautiful natural areas. Participation in the Symposium was reserved for invited participants, suggested by members of the Scientific Committee. The cooperation with the Scientific Committee is highly appreciated. The Symposium brought together 76 researchers from 15 countries representing a broad range of backgrounds relevant to the topic of the meeting. The participants represented the disciplines of materials science and engineering, applied mechanics, applied mathematics and scientific computations. The Symposium comprehensively addressed the analytical, numerical and experimental methods that provide an estimation of the overall, effective properties from microstructural data. The 41 contributions emphasized the significance of the microstructure morphology in understanding the nature and origin of a multitude of properties such as viscoelasticity, plasticity, strength and fracture for a variety of polymer, metal and ceramic based composite materials. Specifically, the Symposium examined and reviewed the current state of the art of micromechanical modelling, experimental investigations and morphological qu- tification of composite materials' microstructure. The volume contains 35 papers published in an alphabetic order after the name of the first author. Much to regret of the Scientific Committee some manuscripts were not submitted. The financial support of the IUT AM, the Obels Family Foundation and the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Aalborg University, is gratefully acknowledged.

Book Description
Composite materials have aroused a great interest over the last few decades, as proven by the huge number of scientific papers and industrial progress. The increase in the use of composite structures in different engineering practices justify the present international meeting where researches from every part of the globe can share and discuss the recent advancements regarding the use of structural components within advanced applications such as buckling, vibrations, repair, reinforcements, concrete, composite laminated materials and more recent metamaterials. Studies about composite structures are truly multidisciplinary and the given contributions can help other researches and professional engineers in their own field. This Conference is suitable as a reference for engineers and scientists working in the professional field, in the industry and the academia and it gives the possibility to share recent advancements in different engineering practices to the outside world. This book aims to collect selected plenary and key-note lectures of this International Conference. For this reason, the establishment of this 20th edition of International Conference on Composite Structures has appeared appropriate to continue what has been begun during the previous editions. ICCS wants to be an occasion for many researchers from each part of the globe to meet and discuss about the recent advancements regarding the use of composite structures, sandwich panels, nanotechnology, bio-composites, delamination and fracture, experimental methods, manufacturing and other countless topics that have filled many sessions during this conference. As a proof of this event, which has taken place in Paris (France), selected plenary and key-note lectures have been collected in the present book.

Flow-Induced Alignment in Composite Materials

Flow-Induced Alignment in Composite Materials PDF Author: T. D. Papathanasiou
Publisher: Woodhead Publishing
ISBN: 9781855732544
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 384

Book Description
