Book Description
Excerpt from Putnam's Garden Handbook No country in the world is quite so well adapted to the culture of flowers as America. Even in the crowded city, flowers are possible. The conditions of growing them are more trying but still they can be grown, and in the city the efforts required to produce them will receive far more appreciation than in the country or suburbs. Then why should not Americans have gardening for their art? We have unlimited space; we have a wonderful variety of climatic and soil conditions, suitable for a wide variety of flowers, and somewhere in this country flowers of every known species can be grown. Every flower is worthy of cultivation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Massey's Garden Book for the Southern States (Classic Reprint)

Massey's Garden Book for the Southern States (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Wilbur Fisk Massey
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781332588060
Category : Gardening
Languages : en
Pages : 134

Book Description
Excerpt from Massey's Garden Book for the Southern States For years past, many readers of The Progressive Farmer have been asking me to prepare a garden book. Therefore, in the intervals of a very busy life, I have prepared this little volume. It is not intended to be a treatise on horticulture, but is simply a little handbook for daily guidance in making the farm garden. I hope it may have some influence in promoting all-the-year-round gardening in the South and aid in abolishing the old-style garden which is surrendered to weeds and dead cornstalks in the fall; and will make it possible instead to have gardens yielding their products without cessation. "Hog and hominy" and black-eye peas are good things, but they do not furnish the healthful variety of food which the garden should enable any farm family to have. A frame and a few glass sashes will furnish plenty of lettuce all winter, and radishes, too, and the open garden should supply spinach, kale, leeks, parsnips, salsify, carrots, cabbages and collards (the latter buried where they grew). These, with the stored onions, potatoes (Irish and sweet) and the canned fruits and vegetables of summer growth, will give the table of the Southern farmer such a bounteous supply of food that he will hardly be able to tell the difference between summer and winter garden. With all these things easily available, there is no need for the Southern farmer to live all winter on salt pork and bacon, corn bread and black-eye peas. So, here's for an "all-the-year-garden." Vintage Wisconsin Gardens

Vintage Wisconsin Gardens PDF Author: Lee Somerville
Publisher: Wisconsin Historical Society
ISBN: 0870206583
Category : Gardening
Languages : en
Pages : 199

Book Description
As Wisconsin’s population moved from farmsteads into villages, towns, and cities, the state saw a growing interest in gardening as a leisure activity and source of civic pride. In Vintage Wisconsin Gardens, Lee Somerville introduces readers to the region’s ornamental gardens of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, showcasing the “vernacular” gardens created by landscaping enthusiasts for their own use and pleasure. The Wisconsin State Horticultural Society, established during the mid-nineteenth century, was the primary source of advice for home gardeners. Through carefully selected excerpts from WSHS articles, Somerville shares the excitement of these gardeners as they traded cultivation and design knowledge and explored the possibilities of their avocation. Women were frequent presenters at the WSHS annual meetings, and their voices resonate. Their writings, and those of their male colleagues, are a remarkable legacy we can draw on today—learning how Wisconsinites past created and enjoyed their gardens helps us appreciate our own. Filled with period and contemporary images, recommended plant lists, and garden layouts, Vintage Wisconsin Gardens will interest those curious about the history of the state’s cultural landscape and inspire readers to restore or reconstruct period gardens.
