Increasing numbers of post-secondary educators, students, and tax payers at large not only welcome wholeheartedly this new emphasis, and -- as suggested by the last clause in the title -- they feel it has been long overdue! A second interpretation of the title -- and the one which is a key theme of this book -- emphasises the substantive concept of the use and management of time (and timing) as an integral component of effective instruction. ABSTRACT: A mixed-method study was designed to examine the characteristics a new teacher in higher education exhibited that align with thebenchmarks for instructional effectiveness in higher education. The participants for the study were nine new teachers in highereducation (N = 9) instructing a three-credit course for 15 weeks. Qualitative information was collected through self-reflection journals.Quantitative information was collected from three videotaped observations coded with two systematic observation instruments (QDITCand BAT). Quantitative data was also collected from the student evaluations (SIR-II). Results indicated five key findings on instructionaleffectiveness. First, instructional effectiveness was demonstrated more from a teacher who was both trained and experienced. Second, the impact of teaching experience on instructional effectiveness was shown through prior experiences in meeting the benchmarks forlearning. Third, ineffective teaching resulted from unclear roles as a faculty member and the lack of understanding for instructionaleffectiveness in higher education. Fourth, a comprehensive evaluation program of instructional effectiveness was important toevaluate teachers in higher education from mUltiple perspectives. Finally, induction assistance program, teacher centers, or the abilityto develop a mentoring relationship for new teachers in higher education is needed to promote instructional effectiveness in the earlyyears of teaching.
