Apple’s exciting new Mastered for iTunes (MFiT) initiative, introduced in early 2012, introduces new possibilities for delivering high-quality audio. For the first time, record labels and program producers are encouraged to deliver audio materials to iTunes in a high resolution format, which can produce better-sounding masters. In iTunes Music, author and world-class mastering engineer Bob Katz starts out with the basics, surveys the recent past, and brings you quickly up to the present—where the current state of digital audio is bleak. Katz explains the evolution of standards for dynamic range through the present and with implications for the future. He details the new methods that Apple is developing to accept high resolution audio and shows step by step how audio engineers and producers can take advantage of them. This book is designed for all those dealing with sound, from sound engineers to music industry executives and musicians—and those aspiring to all these roles. This book will help you understand the issues around delivering high-quality environment and get all your facts straight for when you encounter resistance to good sound. Topics covered include: • Contrasting the production of CD albums with iTunes albums • High Resolution audio • Dithering • Distortion (and how to avoid it) • Lossy Coding • Loudness Metering • Sound Check and how it affects our production techniques • Apple’s tools for Mastered for iTunes Foreword by renowned mastering engineer Bob Ludwig. Audio Programming for Interactive Games

Audio Programming for Interactive Games PDF Author: Martin D. Wilde
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1136125825
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 197

Book Description
Martin Wilde's cutting-edge exploration of the creative potential of game audio systems addresses the latest working methods of those involved in creating and programming immersive, interactive and non-linear audio for games. The book demonstrates how the game programmer can create an software system which enables the audio content provider (composer/sound designer) to maintain direct control over the composition and presentation of an interactive game soundtrack. This system (which is platform independent) is described step-by-step in Wilde's approachable style with illuminating case studies, all source codes for which are provided on the accompanying CD-Rom which readers can use to develop their own audio engines. As a programmer with experience of developing sound and music software engines for computer game titles on a multitude of platforms who is also an experienced musician, Martin Wilde is uniquely placed to address individuals approaching game audio from various levels and areas of expertise. Game audio programmers will learn how to achieve enable even better audio soundtracks and effects, while musicians who want to capitalise on this shift in roles will gain a greater appreciation of the technical issues involved, so enhancing their employment prospects. Students of game design can practice these skills by building their own game audio engines based on the source code provided.

Real-Time Digital Signal Processing

Real-Time Digital Signal Processing PDF Author: Sen M. Kuo
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118706684
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 532

Book Description
Combines both the DSP principles and real-time implementations and applications, and now updated with the new eZdsp USB Stick, which is very low cost, portable and widely employed at many DSP labs. Real-Time Digital Signal Processing introduces fundamental digital signal processing (DSP) principles and will be updated to include the latest DSP applications, introduce new software development tools and adjust the software design process to reflect the latest advances in the field. In the 3rd edition of the book, the key aspect of hands-on experiments will be enhanced to make the DSP principles more interesting and directly interact with the real-world applications. All of the programs will be carefully updated using the most recent version of software development tools and the new TMS320VC5505 eZdsp USB Stick for real-time experiments. Due to its lower cost and portability, the new software and hardware tools are now widely used in university labs and in commercial industrial companies to replace the older and more expensive generation. The new edition will have a renewed focus on real-time applications and will offer step-by-step hands-on experiments for a complete design cycle starting from floating-point C language program to fixed-point C implementation, code optimization using INTRINSICS, and mixed C-and-assembly programming on fixed-point DSP processors. This new methodology enables readers to concentrate on learning DSP fundamentals and innovative applications by relaxing the intensive programming efforts, namely, the traditional DSP assembly coding efforts. The book is organized into two parts; Part One introduces the digital signal processing principles and theories, and Part Two focuses on practical applications. The topics for the applications are the extensions of the theories in Part One with an emphasis placed on the hands-on experiments, systematic design and implementation approaches. The applications provided in the book are carefully chosen to reflect current advances of DSP that are of most relevance for the intended readership. Combines both the DSP principles and real-time implementations and applications using the new eZdsp USB Stick, which is very low cost, portable and widely employed at many DSP labs is now used in the new edition Places renewed emphasis on C-code experiments and reduces the exercises using assembly coding; effective use of C programming, fixed-point C code and INTRINSICS will become the main focus of the new edition. Updates to application areas to reflect latest advances such as speech coding techniques used for next generation networks (NGN), audio coding with surrounding sound, wideband speech codec (ITU G.722.2 Standard), fingerprint for image processing, and biomedical signal processing examples. Contains new addition of several projects that can be used as semester projects; as well as new many new real-time experiments using TI’s binary libraries – the experiments are prepared with flexible interface and modular for readers to adapt and modify to create other useful applications from the provided basic programs. Consists of more MATLAB experiments, such as filter design, algorithm evaluation, proto-typing for C-code architecture, and simulations to aid readers to learn DSP fundamentals. Includes supplementary material of program and data files for examples, applications, and experiments hosted on a companion website. A valuable resource for Postgraduate students enrolled on DSP courses focused on DSP implementation & applications as well as Senior undergraduates studying DSP; engineers and programmers who need to learn and use DSP principles and development tools for their projects.

Pulse Code Modulation Techniques

Pulse Code Modulation Techniques PDF Author: Bill Waggener
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780442014360
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 388

Book Description
Pulse Code Modulation Techniques brings together the theory and practice of PCM at the physical layer, where the "bits meet the silicon", so to speak. The key topics of symbol encoding, detection and synchronization are discussed, in detail, both from a theoretical and a practical standpoint. Topics which have been largely absent in text books, such as multiplexing, formatting and format synchronization, are also considered. Although PCM evolved as a communication technology, it has become an important technology in data recording. In a sense, magnetic or optical media are just specialized communication media and the key technologies discussed in this book are just as important to recording applications as to communications. PCM codes used for magnetic recording applications are discussed along with traditional communication codes. The design, analysis and implementation of a PCM system requires knowledge of very specific techniques associated with detection, synchronization and coding. The techniques have evolved from both ad hoc methods and complex theory. One of the goals of this book is to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the key techniques. Matched filters are not only discussed theoretically, but means for implementing them are also considered. The same is true with symbol synchronization.
