Book Description
Excerpt from The Pulpit and Platform: Being Discourses, Arguments and Orations When Jehovah selected a nation to be keepers of his oracles, and witnesses of his power, he sent unto them his servants, the Prophets, declaring that he would give them a Saviour, who would be descended from one of their tribes.. In. All their difliculties and afflictions, this assurance was aground of consolation and joy. When carried captive into a foreign land, and loaded with the chains of slavery, they looked forward; with hope to the time when they expected the Messiah to ascend the throne of his father David, and become the deliverer of Israel. The manner in which this kingdom of Christ was spoken of by the Prophets led the Jews to believe that his Government would be a temporal one - Isaiah, in his 9th chapter, when describing the character of the looked-for Messiah, uses the following expressions: 'unto us a Child is born; unto us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Father of the everlasting age, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace, there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom; to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice, from henceforth, even forever. Book Description
Excerpt from The Pulpit Orator: Being a New Selection of Eloquent Pulpit Discourses, Accompanied With Observations on the Composition and Delivery of Sermons You ought to vary the voice according to the changes of your fubjeft, the pa iom you would exprefs your felf, or excite in others, the feveral parts of your fpeech, and according to the nature of the words you make ufe of. - T here is nothing fo grating to the ear of an auditory, or that gives them fo much difgul'c, as a voice continually in the fame key, without the leali ding/ion or variety, and yet this is the common fault of molt fpeak crs. There are few voices fo bad that might not be rendered not only ammo/e, but plea/ant, if their owners knew how to give them thofe turn: and variation: which are lo neee 'ary in the courfe of a fpeech, in order to keep alive the attention of the hearer. A anyormity of tone not onlypallr upon the ear, but'is extremelylprej udicial to whatever you fay - It places every part of a fpeech on the fizme level, takes away all power from that which ought to have the greatelt rengt/j, not only of argument but of expre ion, and reduces all to that equal ity of found, which gives no more rig/lin ion to the pa]? onr, than to the dryeft part of a cold and regular tion. This monotony is too common a fault on the age, in the pulpit, the fenate, at the bar, and, in fact, in cv ery place where Iona/ic oeakmg ls praflzyi'd.
