Advanced Arithmetic and Elementary Algebra and Mensuration

Advanced Arithmetic and Elementary Algebra and Mensuration PDF Author: P. Goyen
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780484173957
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 458

Book Description
Excerpt from Advanced Arithmetic and Elementary Algebra and Mensuration: A Text-Book for Secondary Schools and Students Preparing for Public Examinations IN my Advanced Arithmetic I adopted the methods of algebra without using its notation; in the present book I use both its methods and its notation. To make the notation intelligible to students Who have not read algebra, I open With a chapter on literal symbolic representation and such other parts of algebra as are necessary and useful in the generalisation of arithmetical practice and in the solution of equations of the first and second degree. Less than this would be insufficient, and more super fluous, for nine-tenths of the boys and girls Whose education is to be carried beyond the primary but not to the University stage. My treatment of equations of the second degree may seem to suffer from the omission of exercises in the factorisation of compound algebraic expressions but the method of solving such equations by completing the square is very simple and never fails, and may, I hope, be regarded as adequate in a book that is intended to embrace only those departments of algebra that can be made of real service to arithmetic. In my treatment of decimals I have given great prominence to the significance of index notation. This I have done partly because decimal operations cannot be adequately understood Without a sound knowledge of index notation, and partly that the student may the better understand the nature of logarithms when he comes upon them in the succeeding chapter. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Geometry and Mensuration: With Easy Exercises, Designed for Schools and Adult Classes, in Three Parts; Part I. Geometry as a Science; Part II. Geometry as an Art; Part III. Geometry Combined With Arithmetic (Mensuration) On a late public occasion, at the inauguration of one of these Schools, the Duke of Argyll remarked that a very large proportion of the works of art preparing for the Crystal Palace are being executed almost entirely by foreign artists, and that our manufacturers also have been obliged to send abroad for designs; and, as he was convinced that there was no natural disqualification in our population for such work, he hated that the defect would be remedied by the adoption of a more complete system of education. Book Description
Excerpt from Bradbury's Eaton's Practical Arithmetic, Combining Oral and Written Exercises The number of rules has been reduced to a minimum. For example, but one rule is given for multiplication of fractions, one for division of fractions, and two for all cases of reduction of compound numbers, whether integral or fractional. It combines oral and written exercises; and special pains has been taken to give examples that are practical, and that conform to the usual experiences of daily life. In the Appen dix are given seven hundred additional examples for written work, to be drawn from at the discretion of the teacher, for use in connection with the regular work, and for a general review of the subject. Book Description
Excerpt from The Public School Arithmetic and Mensuration The main purposes which have been kept in view by the authors of this Arithmetic are - (1) to aid a pupil in becoming accurate and rapid in calculation; (2) to train him in independent thinking and in applying his knowledge of number to the actual business transactions of life; (3) to aid tho teacher in assigning applications of the various principles which have been explained. Tho classification of the problems has been given with this last aim mainly in view. Explanations of theory and all formal rules have been omitted, the authors believing that teachers can best supply what is necessary in these respects, as tho pupils are led to a clear comprehension of the principles which should be explained by the teacher before the pupils are required to examine the problems. It may be here stated that tho exercises and Problems are mainly intended to be used as applications of the theory taught. While no direct explanation of theory has been given, much has been suggested by tho character of the problems and by their arrangement. The definitions have been carefully prepared and stated in such a way that it is believed the pupil will find little difficulty in understanding them. Numerous mechanical and practical exercises on the fundamental rules for seat work form an important feature of the book. In many cases the answers to the mechanical tests have been omitted to enable tho teacher to judge of the progress of his pupils in accuracy and rapidity. The exercises are a well-graded and progressive series, carefully arranged to develop the reasoning powers of the pupil, and at tho same time to familiarize him with the important practical applications of the science of number. The Metric System has been introduced to meet the growing demands of the time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
