Book Description
Excerpt from Public School Education The shameless cynicism with which the great public plunderers of our day brazen out their in famy, is only equalled by the apathy with which the public permits these robberies, and condone for them by lavishing place and power upon the offenders. The way of the transgressor has ceased to be hard - unless he be a transgressor of very low degree - and rascality rides rampant over the land, from the halls of Congress to the lowest department of public plunder. Book Description
Excerpt from The Public Schools in the United States of America In modern times the ideas of popular Education have Sprung up as necessities. But these ideas, to a great ex tent, have been transplanted from the countries of Europe to the United States of America, hardly differently from the manner in which the Secondary School was introdu ced, the history of which extends back to the beginning of civilization in Europe. Yet the schools of Europe have gradually assumed a character, so peculiar to the different nations, that it is easy to know the German from the French or English institution. And still, though it is true that the nature of educational institutions is certainly determined to a great extent by nationality, social and political interests and the standard of civilization which has been reached by each particular nation, nevertheless the achievements of one nation in the department of education like the re searches of science, cannot long remain unknown to others. And for that reason, despite their national peculiarities, we find that the schools of all European countries have much in common, and that the fundamental ideas pervading those of England, France, Germany and Switzerland are at the present day much the same. That the results' which are achieved in the different countries are so dissimilar is ow ing to two things: Knowledge or ignorance of the best methods and the skill or deficiency of the instructors. Book Description
Excerpt from Reorganization of the Public School System A little more than two decades ago Charles W. Eliot, convinced that the age at which the college graduate completes his course and begins supporting himself was too high, put the question, Can school programs be shortened and enriched? This query precipitated a discussion which, while ranging over the entire field of educational theory and practice, centered particularly upon the purpose and place of the common school, the high school, and the institutions of higher learning. This critical examination of the principal parts of the system has set in clearer light their characteristics and has led to the belief that a proper regard for the distinctive functions of each makes imperative a reorganization, or at least a readjustment, of the chief divisions of the system with respect to articulation, to internal organization, to grade span, and to defined purpose. The matter contained in the second part, however, the part devoted exclu sively to the compositions written by the children and the drawings made by them, appears here for the first time.
