Review of Lake Trout Rehabilitation Efforts in Canadian Waters of Lake Huron, 1974 to 2006

Review of Lake Trout Rehabilitation Efforts in Canadian Waters of Lake Huron, 1974 to 2006 PDF Author: Ontario. Upper Great Lakes Management Unit. Lake Huron Office
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781443519786
Category : Fish populations
Languages : en
Pages : 123

Book Description
Lake trout (Salvelnus namaycush) were the dominant coldwater predator in Lake Huron until population crashes occurred in the 1940s and 1950s. Since that time, international rehabilitation efforts directed at lake trout have been implemented. To further lake trout rehabilitation efforts in Ontario waters of Lake Huron, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources drafted the 1996 Lake Trout Rehabilitation Plan for Lake Huron (Canadian jurisdiction) using the continuum concept for guidance. Using the 1996 Plan objectives and evaluation criteria as benchmarks, progress towards rehabilitation in each of the 16 Lake Trout Rehabilitation Zones (LTRZs) is described. Upon review, the intent of the goal and objectives from the 1996 plan were deemed to be sound. However, revisions to the three objectives have been recommended that more closely relate them to the progression through rehabilitation. These revised objectives more closely reflect timelines associated with rehabilitation, and how these timelines differ between individual LTRZs as a result of differences in stocking history, stocking density, total annual mortality, and age to maturity. In addition to recommendations specific to the goals and objectives, recommendations for changes to rehabilitation strategies (i.e. stocking and exploitation control), evaluation criteria, and assessment tactics are made.--Document.

The Great Lakes Water Wars

The Great Lakes Water Wars PDF Author: Peter Annin
Publisher: Island Press
ISBN: 159726637X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 321

Book Description
The Great Lakes are the largest collection of fresh surface water on earth, and more than 40 million Americans and Canadians live in their basin. Will we divert water from the Great Lakes, causing them to end up like Central Asia's Aral Sea, which has lost 90 percent of its surface area and 75 percent of its volume since 1960? Or will we come to see that unregulated water withdrawals are ultimately catastrophic? Peter Annin writes a fast-paced account of the people and stories behind these upcoming battles. Destined to be the definitive story for the general public as well as policymakers, The Great Lakes Water Wars is a balanced, comprehensive look behind the scenes at the conflicts and compromises that are the past-and future-of this unique resource.
