The Scientific Practice of Professional Psychology

The Scientific Practice of Professional Psychology PDF Author: Steven J. Trierweiler
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1489919449
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 313

Book Description
A workable vision of scientific practice has proven to be an elusive, if laudable, goal for professional psychology. The field cannot be faulted for failing to seek scientific wisdom, but it has been slow to integrate that wisdom fully with the wisdom of practice. This has proven to be a major oversight for, despite psychology's long if the standing commitment to science, practitioners are unlikely to think scientifically methods and products of science are described in ways that make it impossible to do so. Unfortunately, the rhetoric of science too often has done just that: So focused has it been on the problem of distinguishing good science from bad that it has inadvertently defeated any hope of a practical science developing in our field. We offer one remedy for this situation: This book is about scientific thinking for the professional psychologist. Specifically, it is a primer on the application of scientific logic to professional practice. We argue that the professional needs a more straightforward and realistic scientific identity than heretofore has been available. The professional consciously must become a local clinical scientist, bringing all the power of scientific thought to the specifics of the clinical situation. Contrary to forces in psychology that promote uncritical acceptance of science as given by academic researchers or, alternatively, that encourage criticism and ultimate disregard of the scientific endeavor, we call for a redoubling of efforts to incorporate scientific thought into practical professional inquiry.

Scientist as Subject

Scientist as Subject PDF Author: Michael J. Mahoney
Publisher: Eliot Werner Publications/Percheron Press
ISBN:
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 283

Book Description
In this book, originally published by Ballinger in 1976, Michael Mahoney documents the idiosyncracies and foibles of the scientific process as a field of endeavor. A new introduction updates his discussion in light of subsequent developments, including such aspects of academia as politics and tenure, publication and power relations, science studies and constructivist inquiry, and what have come to be called the "science wars."

Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy as a Science

Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy as a Science PDF Author: Luciano L'Abate
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461444519
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 378

Book Description
This book demonstrates how clinical psychology and psychotherapy practices may reach a scientific level provided they change the three basic paradigms that have controlled those practices in the last century. These three, now outdated, paradigms, are: (1) one-on-one (2) personal contacts (3) through talk. These paradigms have served well in the past but they are no less helpful in the current digitally focused world.

Toward a Theology of Scientific Endeavour

Toward a Theology of Scientific Endeavour PDF Author: Professor Christopher B Kaiser
Publisher: Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.
ISBN: 1409477665
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
Foundations of science are specific conditions of the cosmos, of human intelligence, of cultural beliefs, and of technological structures that make the pursuit of modern science possible. Each of the four foundations of scientific endeavour can be studied as a topic on its own. The concurrent study of all four together reveals several tensions and interconnections among them that point the way to a greater unification of faith and science. This book explores four foundations of scientific endeavour and investigates some of the paradoxes each of them raises. Kaiser shows that the resolution of these paradoxes inevitably leads us into theological discourse and raises new challenges for theological endeavour. In order to address these challenges, Kaiser draws on the wider resources of the Judeo-Christian tradition and argues for a refocusing of contemporary theology from the perspective of natural science.
