Come messo in evidenza da Karl Löwith, la moderna considerazione della storia si sarebbe sviluppata dalla secolarizzazione dell'immaginario ebraico-cristiano. Le molte ideologie degli ultimi secoli, pur ponendosi spesso in conflitto con la memoria religiosa, sarebbero scaturite dalla laicizzazione di alcuni presupposti teologici. Dopo aver esaminato il rapporto fra religione e psicologia del profondo, questo testo declina la tesi di Löwith anzitutto nell'ambito del pensiero di Sigmund Freud, indagando la particolare "filosofia della storia" espressa dal padre della psicoanalisi ne L'avvenire di un'illusione. In secondo luogo è valutata la prospettiva manifestata da Ernst Bloch in Ateismo nel cristianesimo, e riassunta dal filosofo marxista nel più grande dei paradossi: "Solo un ateo può essere un buon cristiano, solo un cristiano può essere un buon ateo". In generale è avanzata la tesi secondo cui, pur vivendo in un contesto "post-religioso" e successivo alla morte di Dio, l'uomo contemporaneo mantenga ancora una certa sensibilità escatologica e teologica, inconsciamente presente anche nella lettura delle attuali crisi storiche.
