Los sistemas de distribución de energía eléctrica deben satisfacer la demanda de energía eléctrica de la forma más económica posible, con un grado de calidad y continuidad aceptable. Sin embargo, sus fallas son una de las principales causas de indisponibilidad en el suministro de esta fuente de energía a los usuarios. Las mejoras a la confiabilidad, que se practican actualmente en México, se basan en criterios deterministas, que no responden a la naturaleza estocástica del comportamiento de los sistemas, y se aplican sin que exista un balance adecuado entre confiabilidad y economía. Lograr este equilibrio requiere aplicar una metodología de planeación de costo mínimo que considere, además del comportamiento histórico del sistema, su evaluación ante diferentes alternativas de inversión, garantizando que los recursos económicos disponibles y limitados, se utilicen de manera óptima para lograr el mayor grado de confiabilidad posible. En este trabajo se presentan los fundamentos y las metodologías requeridas para evaluar los efectos del diseño y de los criterios operativos sobre la confiabilidad de los puntos de carga del sistema de distribución y su relación con los principales índices de confiabilidad utilizados por las empresas eléctricas en el mundo, haciendo énfasis en la necesidad de evaluar el costo de reforzar éstos indicadores. Se investiga el uso del sistema de análisis de sistemas de distribución SynerGEE, como una herramienta de simulación útil para evaluar la confiabilidad de los sistemas de distribución de manera predictiva. La falta de experiencia que se tiene en México con este tipo de análisis, requiere que los ingenieros de distribución se familiaricen con estos conceptos, para aplicarlos en el diseño de sus sistemas de distribución, con la habilidad para utilizar las herramientas de simulación modernas. Con este propósito se plantean una serie de casos de estudio sencillos, con los cuales se sentirán cómodos para introducirse en la exploración y aprendizaje de este tema.
