Nuclear Physics

Nuclear Physics PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309173663
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 222

Book Description
Dramatic progress has been made in all branches of physics since the National Research Council's 1986 decadal survey of the field. The Physics in a New Era series explores these advances and looks ahead to future goals. The series includes assessments of the major subfields and reports on several smaller subfields, and preparation has begun on an overview volume on the unity of physics, its relationships to other fields, and its contributions to national needs. Nuclear Physics is the latest volume of the series. The book describes current activity in understanding nuclear structure and symmetries, the behavior of matter at extreme densities, the role of nuclear physics in astrophysics and cosmology, and the instrumentation and facilities used by the field. It makes recommendations on the resources needed for experimental and theoretical advances in the coming decade.

Book Description
Creativity is necessary for leading a successful and fulfilling life. Creative solutions are required because the status quo is never good enough, and our goal should always be to push beyond the limits of what seems possible. Great ideas are needed to solve all the problems we face and to enrich our lives. With the tools presented in the following chapters, we will learn how to take on the challenges, big and small, that come our way, and to see that every word, every idea, and every moment provides an opportunity for creativity that will enhance our lives. The first half of the book focuses on the inside out--what you can personally do to increase your own creative aptitude and attitude. The second half deals with the outside in--how you can change the local and cultural environment to increase the creativity quotient of your community.--From publisher description.

Advances in Nuclear Physics

Advances in Nuclear Physics PDF Author: J.W. Negele

Book Description
The two comprehensive reviews in this volume address two fundamental problems that have been of long-standing interest and are the focus of current effort in contemporary nuclear physics: exploring experimentally the density distributions of constituents within the nucleus and understand ing nuclear structure and interactions in terms of hadronic degrees of freedom. One of the major goals of experimental probes of atomic nuclei has been to discover the spatial distribution of the constituents within the nucleus. As the energy and specificity of probes have increased over the years, the degree of spatial resolution and ability to select specific charge, current, spin, and isospin densities have correspondingly increased. In the first chapter, Batty, Friedman, Gils, and Rebel provide a thorough review of what has been learned about nuclear density distributions using electrons, muons, nucleons, antinucleons, pions, alpha particles, and kaons as probes. This current understanding, and the limitations thereof, are crucial in framing the questions that motivate the next generation of experimental facilities to study atomic nuclei with electromagnetic and hadronic probes. The second chapter, by Machleidt, reviews our current understanding of nuclear forces and structure in terms of hadronic degrees of freedom, that is, in terms of mesons and nucleons. Such an understanding in terms of hadronic variables is crucial for two reasons. First, since effective hadronic theories are quite successful in describing a broad range of phenomena in low-energy nuclear physics, and there are clear experimental signatures of meson exchange currents in nuclei, we must understand their foundations.

Pages : 149

Book Description
One of the most fundamental problems in elementary particle physics is the study of the interaction of the pion meson with nucleons. It is believed that the pion meson plays a fundamental role in the description of nuclear forces and it is important, therefore, to understand the interaction of these particles. The primary method of gaining information on this interaction is through scattering experiments, and this book is concerned primarily with studies of pion-nucleon scattering at high energies. Originally published in 1969. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
