Book Description
Is democratic governance good for economic prosperity? Does it accelerate progress towards social welfare and human development? Does it generate a peace-dividend and reduce conflict at home? Within the international community, democracy and governance are widely advocated as intrinsically desirable goals. Nevertheless, alternative schools of thought dispute their consequences and the most effective strategy for achieving critical developmental objectives. This book argues that both liberal democracy and state capacity need to be strengthened to ensure effective development, within the constraints posed by structural conditions. Liberal democracy allows citizens to express their demands, hold public officials to account and rid themselves of ineffective leaders. Yet rising public demands that cannot be met by the state generate disillusionment with incumbent officeholders, the regime, or ultimately the promise of liberal democracy ideals. Thus governance capacity also plays a vital role in advancing human security, enabling states to respond effectively to citizen's demands.

Illusions of Prosperity
Author: Joel Blau
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Business relocation
Languages : en
Pages : 272
Book Description
Faith in the free market - the idea that, for instance, profit-seeking managed care companies will improve the health care delivery system - has become a basic tenet of public policy debate. But as Joel Blau demonstrates in this eye-opening book, so-called "free market" programmes have been a dismal failure, heightening inequality, lowering the median standard of living, and steadily eroding the quality of our social and political life. In Illusions of Prosperity, Blau launches a far-reaching assault on the idea that "the market" knows best. Blau writes that while the share of the national income held by the bottom four fifths of the population (the poor and broad middle class combined) has continued to decline, the top fifth gained 97 percent of the increase in total household income between 1979 and 1994. "Few experiments," Blau comments, "yield such clear outcomes. Although many had hoped to benefit from the new market economy, this affluent fifth is the only segment of the population that truly has."; Blau looks at recent reforms in NAFTA, education, job training, welfare, and much more, showing that the new social policies have made matters worse, because reforms that rely on the market can't compensate for the market's deficiencies. Instead, he calls for a stronger, more caring government to counter the debilitating effects of the market, and he urges the development of the broadest possible political alliances to ensure economic security. Sure to raise controversy, Illusions of Prosperity turns today's conventional wisdom inside out, making a profound case for the importance of a strong government in a world where markets do not have all the answers.

Enemies of Prosperity
Author: Antony Mueller
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781731156983
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 151
Book Description
This book shows the failure of socialism, interventionism, and the welfare state. Internationally renowned economist Antony Mueller analyses why socialism brings misery, the suppression of freedom, and a broken economy. Interventionism comes along with political populism and results in state capitalism and the growth of government. People like to praise this mixed system as a welfare state, but they fail to recognize that this politics does not lead to the hoped-for Eldorado but is the path to stagnation. The welfare state produces most of the social ailments, which the government claims to heal. The more generous the social assistance, the larger the number of social welfare recipients, and the higher the burden, the more the shadow economy will flourish. When the tax code gets more complicated, tax evasion rises. The more access to public healthcare and medication, the sicker people become. The higher the percentage of a populational cohort that attends high schools and colleges, the lower the educational level. Interventionism discourages innovation and leads to a waste of resources due to the cost of regulation and the misallocation brought about by the state intervention. The results are perpetual fiscal and monetary crises. The book uses excerpts from Antony Mueller's comprehensive monograph "Beyond the State and Politics".
