Vetiver Grass

Vetiver Grass PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309042690
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 186

Book Description
For developing nations, soil erosion is among the most chronic environmental and economic burdens. Vast amounts of topsoil are washed or blown away from arable land only to accumulate in rivers, reservoirs, harbors, and estuaries, thereby creating a double disaster: a vital resource disappears from where it is desperately needed and is deposited where it is equally unwanted. Despite much rhetoric and effort, little has been done to overcome this problem. Vetiver, a little-known tropical grass, offers one practical and inexpensive way to control erosion on a huge scale in both humid and semi-arid regions. Hedges of this deeply rooted species catch and hold back sediments while the stiff foliage acts as a filter that also slows runoff and keeps moisture on site. This book assesses vetiver's promise and limitations and identifies places where this grass can be deployed without undue environmental risk.

Book Description
Better transport is essential to Myanmar’s development. After decades of underinvestment, Myanmar’s transport infrastructure lags behind other regional countries. Sixty percent of trunk highways and most of the railways need maintenance or rehabilitation. River infrastructure does not exist, while 20 million people lack basic road access. Can the transport sector deliver upon the master plan’s objectives? What is needed to improve the quality of the infrastructure and services for the industry? How can basic transport services be provided to all? How can Myanmar reduce the economic and social cost of transport? These reports attempt to answer these questions.

Emerging Challenges and Trends in TVET in the Asia-Pacific Region PDF Author: Shyamal Majumdar
Publisher: Brill / Sense
ISBN: 9789460913891
Category : Electronic books
Languages : en
Pages : 235

Book Description
The Asia-Pacific countries are in various stages of socio-economic development. Geo-political factors affect the pace of development of the countries in the area also referred to as the Colombo Plan region. TVET's acknowledged importance in the efforts to improve the quality of life of its people is a common motif in the book. The twenty articles by TVET experts and practitioners as well as policy makers provide the readerresearcher with a comprehensive appreciation of the respective TVET problems and issues in the countries included. The book is the latest attempt to put under one cover both macro and micro views of TVET, underscoring its current status, emerging trends, best practices and challenges that beset Individual systems. The book presents a comprehensive body of TVET information for use as a handy reference, both by serious researchers and national policymakers, also by practitioners on how TVET plays a pivotal role in national socio-economic development. The experiences shared can be models of "systems that worked," learning from them and "avoiding the pitfalls." They further emphasize that "no one solution fi ts all" when addressing the gamut of challenges and concerns, the resources required and the preferred mindset when implementing TVET reforms.

Architectural Guide Yangon

Architectural Guide Yangon PDF Author: Ben Bansal
Publisher: Dom Publishers
ISBN: 9783869223759
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 399

Book Description
Architectural Guide Yangon presents around one hundred memorable buildings from Myanmar's historical capital. Following decades of international isolation, the city's vast heritage remains largely, surprisingly and spectacularly intact. Rangoon - as it was known under the British - was a melting pot of British India. Vivid traces of this legacy are everywhere, especially in the city's Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish and Muslim houses of worship that often stand side by side, down town, in Yangon's tightly-gridded streets. Since the country's independence from the British in 1948, successive authoritarian regimes have also stamped the cityscape with their legacies. Today Yangon is a bustling and busy city in flux, at the frontier of Myanmar's rapid opening to the wider world. Yangon's urban fabric deserves a systematic guide that nourishes every visitor and resident's shared fascination for the city and its history, offering countless anecdotes and notes on architectural detail.
