Book Description
Polyolefins have long been recognized as a very fertile field in which to search for plastic dielectrics. Some of the reasons for this fact include the availability of these materials in large quantities from numerous suppliers; their relatively low price, which makes them attractive for large-volume applications; and their excellent electrical insulating properties, resulting in part from their high degree of nonpolarity. Originally, low-density polyethylene was used exclusively among the polyolefins for this application. The promise of better mechanical properties led to the introduction of high-density polyethylene, sometimes called linear polyethylene, for both insulation and jacketing of wire and cable. Both high- and low-density polyethylene are currently in wide use for these applications. Low-density polyethylene is most frequently used for conductor insulation while high-density polyethylene is more widely used as a jacketing compound, reflecting the relative strong points of the 2 materials. Polypropylene has better electrical properties than either high- or low-density polyethylene. It also has a much higher glass-transition temperature, however, which results in more brittleness than is found in polyethylene. Initially this brittleness caused the rejection of polypropylene in most electrical applications. Further work has largely overcome the brittleness problem through the development of impact-modified polypropylenes and propylene-ethylene copolymers, a new class of materials also included under the general heading of propylene polymers. Polymer Insulation Applied for HVDC Transmission

Polymer Insulation Applied for HVDC Transmission PDF Author: Boxue Du
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811597316
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 674

Book Description
This book focuses on polymer insulation as applied to HVDC transmission. It addresses both fundamental principles and engineering practice, with more weight placed on the latter. This is achieved by providing in-depth studies on a number of major topics such as DC insulation structure, DC insulation design, nanocomposites, modification, testing and performance evaluation. In turn, several typical HVDC insulation application cases are examined in detail, e.g. cables, cable accessories, GIS/GIL, and converter transformers. A comprehensive and systematic study on polymer insulation modification and ageing assessment is one of the book’s major features, making it particularly well suited for readers who are interested in learning about polymer insulation materials. Given its scope, it offers a valuable resource for researchers, engineers and graduate students in the fields of high-voltage and insulation technologies, electrical engineering, material engineering, etc.

Solid Polypropylene Insulation for Wire and Cable Applications

Solid Polypropylene Insulation for Wire and Cable Applications PDF Author: Gordon P. Johnson
Publisher:
ISBN:

Languages : en
Pages : 19

Book Description
Although polypropylene is not subject to environmental stress cracking, several compounds commonly used in the wire and cable industry were found that have a deleterious affect on polypropylene. For example, polypropylene will embrittle rapidly when in contact with polybutenes at elevated temperatures. Several basic applications were found where polypropylene can be used to advantage. Because of its excellent resistance to high temperature deformation and its excellent electrical properties, polypropylene was used to replace rubber insulation and thus miniaturized some constructions. The superior abrasion resistance of polypropylene over polyethylene permitted miniaturization and manufacturing in longer lengths some cables formerly insulated with polyethylene. The combination of excellent processing and abrasion resistance properties were used to replace nylon insulation with polypropylene and take advantage of the latter's superior electrical properties. The addition of stabilizers to resist copper catalyzed oxidation is a major break through. It is anticipated that with the added stabilizer polypropylene will become more widely accepted as an insulating material and that a market for polypropylene in the wire and cable industry will develop in the next few years. Electrical Power Cable Engineering

Electrical Power Cable Engineering PDF Author: William A. Thue
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351833081
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 463

Book Description
Fully updated, Electrical Power Cable Engineering, Third Edition again concentrates on the remarkably complex design, application, and preparation methods required to terminate and splice cables. This latest addition to the CRC Press Power Engineering series covers cutting-edge methods for design, manufacture, installation, operation, and maintenance of reliable power cable systems. It is based largely on feedback from experienced university lecturers who have taught courses on these very concepts. The book emphasizes methods to optimize vital design and installation of power cables used in the interrelated fields of electrical, mechanical, and, to some extent, civil engineering. An in-depth exploration of power cable characteristics and applications, it illustrates the many factors that can hinder real-world cable performance. Content focuses on low and medium voltages, considering that these are used for the majority of cables in service globally. This edition also details techniques for testing shielded power cable systems in the field, demonstrating how conductor material size and design depend on ampacity, voltage regulation, and other factors. Covering everything from manufacturing to testing, this resource will benefit: Cable engineers and technicians (working for investor-owned utilities, rural electric cooperatives, and industrial manufacturers) who need to improve their oversight and understanding of power cables Universities that offer electrical power courses Professionals who must master new power cable terminology, engineering characteristics, and background information that will aid them in their decision making responsibilities The author is a life fellow of the IEEE and one of the original developers of industry standards for cables and accessories. To simplify field fundamentals and techniques for less experienced readers, his book contains new, updated, and expanded chapters and an extensive glossary, in addition to useful references, tables, equations, and photographs. More experienced engineers will appreciate the book’s invaluable updates on the emerging materials, products, and concepts driving their dynamic field.

Polypropylene

Polypropylene PDF Author: J. Karger-Kocsis
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401144214

Languages : en
Pages : 988

Book Description
My heart sank when I was approached by Dr Hastings and by Professor Briggs (Senior Editor of Materials Science and Technology and Series Editor of Polymer Science and Technology Series at Chapman & Hall, respectively) to edit a book with the provisional title Handbook of Poly propylene. My reluctance was due to the fact that my former book [1] along with that of Moore [2], issued in the meantime, seemed to cover the information demand on polypropylene and related systems. Encour aged, however, by some colleagues (the new generation of scientists and engineers needs a good reference book with easy information retrieval, and the development with metallocene catalysts deserves a new update!), I started on this venture. Having some experience with polypropylene systems and being aware of the current literature, it was easy to settle the titles for the book chapters and also to select and approach the most suitable potential contributors. Fortunately, many of my first-choice authors accepted the invitation to contribute. Like all editors of multi-author volumes, I recognize that obtaining contributors follows an S-type curve of asymptotic saturation when the number of willing contributors is plotted as a function of time. The saturation point is, however, never reached and as a consequence, Dear Reader, you will also find some topics of some relevance which are not explicitly treated in this book (but, believe me, I have considered them).
